ਹੈਲੋ, English Expressions ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਹੈ। ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਇੰਗਲਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼, ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ।

ਮੈਂ ਰਾਜਵੀਰ ਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂਗੇ ਇੰਗਲਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ ‘‘treading on eggshells’’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ । ‘‘ਆਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਛਿਲੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨਾ...?’’ ਕੀ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋ, ਕੀ ਹੋਉ ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ? ਕੁਝ ਪੱਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ? ਠੀਕ ਹੈ, ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹੋ।

ਲੀ ਇਕ ਦੁਕਾਨ ’ਤੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਨ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਇਹ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ। ਚਲੋ ਪਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ‘tricky’ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੈ।

Hi Li. It looks like you've been busy.

Li

I've just picked up some groceries from the local shop, you know - milk, eggs, bread, flour – I'm going to make a cake.

Rob

Oh good. So how was Mr Brown, the shopkeeper? Hasn't he just split up with his wife?

Li

He has. It was tricky in the shop. I didn't want to say anything to him just in case I mentioned his wife. I only said: "Good morning" and he just said: "Is it?"

ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰ ਸ੍ਰੀਮਾਨ ਬਰਾਊਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਤੋਂ ਅਲੱਗ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਲੀ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਲੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, ‘ਸ਼ੁੱਭ ਸਵੇਰ’ ਤਾਂ ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ’ਚ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, ਸੱਚੀਂ ਹੈ? ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋ, ਸ੍ਰੀਮਾਨ ਬਰਾਊਨ ਲਈ ਸਵੇਰ ਸ਼ੁੱਭ ਸੀ? ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ, ਅਜਿਹੀ ਨਾਜ਼ੁਕ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪੈਣਾ। ਚਲੋ, ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹੋ।

Hmm, it sounds like you've been treading on eggshells.

Li

Oh no, the shop was very clean, nothing on the floor – I don't really think he's the sort of person to throw food around!

Rob

No Li – I mean you were trying very hard not to upset him – that's what treading on eggshells means.

Li

Oh! So it's about being nice - it's about being sensitive to the situation?

Rob

Yes.

Li

Well, I was very sensitive. But what have eggshells got to do with it?

Rob

Well, if there were eggshells on the floor literally you would have to be very careful where you put your feet!

ਰੱਖਣਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਸ੍ਰੀਮਾਨ ਬਰਾਊਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਾ ਕਰੇ। ਸੋ ਆਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਛਿਲੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ

ਸਾਵਧਾਨੀ ਵਰਤਨਾਂ ਕਿ ਸਾਡਾ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਾ ਕਰੇ। ਜੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰਾ,

ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕੀ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾਟੁੱਟਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਨੂੰ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੁਝ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੋਗੇ ਜਾਂ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰੋਗੇ?

ਚਲੋ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਉਦਹਾਰਨਾਂ।

Examples:

I had to be so careful with what I said to my ex-girlfriend. The smallest thing made her angry: it was like treading on eggshells.

Ever since my argument with my neighbour about parking, I feel like I've been treading on eggshells.

Since my friend's father died, I don't know what to say to him: it's like treading on eggshells.

So, treading on eggshells can be awkward because you don't know what to say and you don't want to offend someone. So Rob, what should I have said to Mr Brown?

You could have said 'plenty more fish in the sea!'

Li

What?!

Rob

Or… 'I didn't like her much anyway'?

Li

Rob, I think that's the opposite of treading on eggshells.

Rob

Really? Anyway let me help you with your shopping… oops (Rob drops the eggs!).

Li

Rob! You've dropped the eggs all over my kitchen floor.

Rob

Now you really will be walking on eggshells!

ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ, ਰੌਬ ਨੇ ਲੀ ਦੀ ਰਸੋਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਪਾਸੇ ਆਂਡੇ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਹੁਣ ਤਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੀਂ ਆਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਛਿਲੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਪਏਗਾ। ਪਰ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੋ ਆਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਛਿਲੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ। ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਆਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਛਿਲੜਾਂ ’ਤੇ। ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਨਵੇਂ ‘English Expressions’ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਲਈ। ਬਾਏ।
