ఇవాళ మనకు బాగా నవ్వు తెప్పించే విషయాల గురించి ఎలా మాట్లాడాలో తెలుసుకుందాం.

Tom
That's important – we all need to laugh! Shall I tell you a joke?

సౌమ్య 
I'm not sure we've got time for that!  Just listen to these speakers. తమకు ఎలాంటి విషయాలు బాగా నవ్వు తెప్పిస్తాయో చెప్తున్నారు. వీళ్లల్లో ఎవరు వాళ్ల కుటుంబ సభ్యుల్లో ఒకరి గురించి చెప్తున్నారు?

విన్నారా? చివరి వ్యక్తి తన cousinగురించి చెప్తున్నారు. అతను చాలా సరదా అయిన మనిషి, భలే జోక్స్ వేస్తాడు అంటున్నారు. సరే, తమను నవ్వించే విషయాల గురించి ఒక్కొక్కరూ ఎలా చెప్పారో పరిశీలిద్దాం. మొదటి వ్యక్తి ఏమన్నారు?

Here we had the adverb 'really' – which is similar to 'very'. We can use different adverbs to say how funny something is. We can make it stronger by saying something is 'incredibly funny', or we can make it weaker by saying it's 'quite funny'.

రెండో వ్యక్తి ఏమన్నారో విందా? Which word do you think means 'very funny'?

'Hilarious' అంటే చాలా నవ్వు తెప్పించేది. చాలా ఉల్లాసపరిచేది అని అర్థం. Tom, tell us more about it. 

Tom
Hilarious is an adjective that means 'very funny' and it gives us the noun 'hilarity'. Both of these forms are stressed on the second syllable – it's hilarious and hilarity. 

Listen to the pronunciation and repeat after me:

‘hilarious’

‘This book is hilarious.’

తరువాతి వ్యక్తి ఏమన్నారో విందాం.

సౌమ్య 
'Laugh' అంటే గట్టిగా నవ్వడం లేదా పెద్దగా నవ్వడం. అతనితో పాటూ పని చేసే వ్యక్తులు అతన్ని బాగా నవ్విస్తారట. 'Makes me' అంటే ఫలనా పని చేసేలా చేస్తారు అనే అర్థం వస్తుంది. We can also use the pronoun ‘you’ with this expression. ‘Makes you’ అన్నా ఇంచుమించు అదే అర్థం వస్తుంది.

Obviously, if something is funny it can make you laugh – it might also 'make you smile' or 'make you happy'. 

Listen to these examples and repeat them: 

‘Your jokes always make me smile.’

‘Seeing my brother makes me happy.’

చివరి వ్యక్తి ఒక మంచి idiom - నుడికారం వాడారు. మళ్లీ వింటూ అదేమిటో జాగ్రత్తగా గమనించండి.

He used the verb 'crack' – అనే క్రియ వాడారు. 'She really cracks me up!' - అంటే తెలుగులో మనం నవ్వి నవ్వి కడుపు చెక్కలైపోయింది అంటాం కదా, అదే ఇది! Cracking up అంటే నవ్వి నవ్వి ముక్కలు చెక్కలైపోవడం!

If something or someone 'cracks you up' it means it makes you laugh a lot. We could also use it to describe laughing. For this, we use ‘be’. I could say: 'that joke is so funny – I am cracking up!' 

సౌమ్య 
Right – ఇప్పుడు మీకో చిన్న టెస్ట్! వీటిల్లో మీకు ఎన్ని గుర్తుంటాయో చూద్దాం. జోక్స్ గురించి చెబుతూ ‘funny’ అనే పదం వాడాలి.

Nice. ఇప్పుడు 'hilarious'  అనే పదం వాడుతూ ఒక film గురించి చెప్పాలి. 

Tom
I think this film is hilarious! 

సౌమ్య 
Good. ‘Makes me’, ‘makes you’ వాడి చెప్పడం గుర్తుందా? అది ఒక 'programme' మిమ్మల్ని బాగా నవ్విస్తుంది అని చెప్పండి. 

Tom
This programme really makes me laugh. 

సౌమ్య 
ఒక నుడికారం గురించి చెప్పుకున్నాం గుర్తుందా? కడుపు చెక్కలైపోవడాన్ని ఏమంటారు? మీ ఫ్రెండ్ మిమ్మల్ని కడుపు చెయ్యలయిపోయేలా నవ్విస్తారు అని చెప్పాలి.

My friend really cracks me up! 

సౌమ్య 
Good job! బాగా చెప్పారు.

Tom
Ah! So you'll be able to talk about my jokes now… let me just tell you a new one. 

సౌమ్య 
No, no, no. We use these for things that are really funny.
