Tom
Hi everybody! I’m Tom.
Sam
Hello, I’m Sam! Today’s episode is going to begin a little differently. I’m going to play you a clip from a BBC Radio 4 documentary called Extinct!
Bolam
Extinct
Sam
That’s right. Listen to the clip, which animal does the presenter Andrew Luck-Baker say is in danger of extinction, or of becoming extinct?
Andrew
We're on a river flowing through the countryside of Assam in North-East India. A fisherman casts his net from the bank into this tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra.
Colleague
Yes, there are dolphins. Just where these two currents are, there are dolphins.
Andrew
The Ganges river dolphin, foraging where two branches of the river meet. This used to be a common sight throughout the whole Brahmaputra and Ganges river systems, but its rarity these days is leading us to think that this species ultimate fate might be the same as its Chinese cousin, the Yangtze river dolphin, declared functionally extinct.
Bolam
Dolphin!
Tom
So, which species of animal are under threat in your country?
Bolam
Sam
Well, let’s turn this into today’s question. In Britain, we have a beautiful bird called the turtle dove. What percentage of UK turtle doves have disappeared in the last 20 years?
a) 50%
b) 75%
c) 90%
Bolam
Sam
Well, in this survey, it’s the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. But just because they’re counting them, it doesn’t mean they’re accountable.
Bolam
To be accountable 무언가를 책임지는 이라는 뜻이죠.
Tom
I suppose we all need to help with conservation, really.
Bolam
Conservation
Tom
Unfortunately, in my opinion, with population growth continuing at the current rate, it’s only going to get more difficult for animals!
Sam
That’s quite a pessimistic view, Tom.
Bolam
Sam
Yes, the study by the RSPB said that farming was one of the main causes for environmental destruction. The fact that they’re reporting on this, and that we’re talking about it now, shows that people are thinking seriously about these things!
Bolam
Surely that's a cause for optimism.
Tom
Well, I’m not convinced. Try telling that to the turtle dove.
Sam
Ah! Not many, unfortunately. Let’s give you the answer to today’s quiz. According to the survey, more than 90% of the British turtle dove population has disappeared since 1995.
Bolam
Oh no! That’s so sad
Sam
Hopefully our awareness has been raised enough to limit the rate of extinction, though?
Tom
There’s that optimism again, Sam! I think it’s a disaster already, actually!
Sam
Fair enough, I don’t disagree with you on this occasion, actually.
Bolam
Thanks for joining us and see you next week for more English Together. Bye!
Meaning & Use
extinction
This word appears in several forms in the episode. Extinct is a word we use to describe a species (종) of animal which no longer exists. We often use the verb ‘become’ with extinct.
The process of becoming extinct is called extinction.
Polar bears are in danger of becoming extinct.
We use the passive voice to emphasise the person or thing that is affected by a change. It is often used in the context of extinction. We form the passive using (be) + past participle.

The dodo was hunted to extinction.
optimism/pessimism
When someone has a positive attitude to something, we can say that they are optimistic. The noun form is optimism.
When someone has a negative way of thinking about things, we can say that they are pessimistic. The noun form is pessimism.
