Adverts which show men and women in 'old-fashioned' gender stereotypical roles, for example a woman cleaning a house alone, are to be banned from the UK for maintaining gender inequality.

The story

The Advertising Standards Authority has signalled its readiness to ban commercials which perpetuate sexist stereotypes.

Examples given by the authority include ads which show women having sole responsibility for cleaning and men failing to carry out simple household tasks.

The ASA’s chief executive, Guy Parker, said portrayals which reinforced outdated views of gender roles can play a part in causing inequality.
