USEFUL PHRASES
‘diaspora’
This word means a group of people who move from their ‘home’ country to live in other countries. For example, a diaspora of refugees attempted to move to the neighbouring country during the civil war.
‘swing’
This word means to change from one opinion or mood to another and is often used to talk about elections. For example, the vote swung strongly to the opposition party because of the leadership scandal.
‘immigration’
This word means the process when people come to live in a different country permanently. For example, Tokyo is seeing an increase in immigration from countries all over the world.
‘naturalised’
This word means to make a person a legal citizen of a country that they were not born in. For example, the British-born family were made naturalised citizen of Canada last year.
