Introduction

A report is information which can be presented verbally or in writing. There are some words that we often use together. These are called collocations. Learn some of the verbs that we often use with the noun 'report' with Beth in this video.

Common collocations with 'report'

deliver a report
If you deliver a report, you give the finished report to the person or company that wanted the report. You might deliver your report verbally, like in a presentation, or in writing, for example, in a document attached to an email. 

  • I can't come out tonight. This report has to be delivered by 8am Monday morning. 

commission a report
If you commision a report, you or your company pay somebody else to make the report you need. For example, a company might commission a financial report by paying an accounting firm and providing the financial information.

  • We have commissioned a report on our climate impact and hope to be able to implement any recommendations over the next five years.

produce a report
If you produce a report, you create a report by gathering the relevant information and putting it all together. 

  • Could you produce a report on our audience views over the last 3 months? 

publish a report
If you publish a report, it appears in print or digitally online for other people to read. 

  • Let's publish this report in March, just before the new financial year. 

leak a report
If a report is leaked, the information in the report is made available before it should be – this could be because a company was hacked. 

  • Someone has leaked the government report and now the information is in all the papers a week early. 

outline a report
To outline a report means to give the most important information from the report. For example, if a report is very long and you only want to know the key ideas, not the detail, you might ask for it to be outlined. 

  • How can I outline this 500-page report in just 50 words? It's impossible!

Then the report will be published, so it might appear online or in print. Hopefully it won't be leaked in advance. That means the information in the report becomes known before it should be.

Be careful. It's really important that no part of this report is leaked before publication date.
