Function/वापर

We use unreal conditionals to describe hypothetical situations, like dreams.
काल्पनिक परिस्थितीबद्दल बोलताना unreal conditionals वापरतात, उदा. स्वप्न. Unreal म्हणजे खोटं.

We use them to talk about things we imagine happening when something else, happens.

एखादी घटना घडल्यावर काय होईल याबद्दल कल्पनाविलास करताना याचा वापर करतात.

If I found a lot of money, I'd buy a helicopter.
I'd be a pilot, if I could have any job.

If we use an unreal conditional, we don't expect something to happen.

Unreal conditional, वापरतात तेव्हा ते घडेलच अशी अपेक्षा नसते. 

Structure/रचना

Positive form: सकारात्मक 
if + past simple + would

Or

Would + if + past simple

If I could sing, I'd be famous.

I'd be famous if I could sing.

Negative form: नकारात्मक 

Either clause can be made negative.
Either clause ( दोन्हीपैकी एक) चा वापर नकारात्मक अर्थानेही करता येतो. 

If I didn't know how to cook, I'd be very hungry.
If I played a sport, I wouldn't be so unfit.

Question form: प्रश्नार्थक 
To make a question, swap will and the subject in the result clause.
प्रश्न विचारण्यासाठी कर्ता आणि क्रियापदाची अदलाबदल करतात.

If it was your birthday today, would you go to work?
Would you go to work if it was your birthday today?

Extension: 

• People often use 'were' instead of 'was' in unreal conditionals. It is called the subjunctive and is especially common in formal language.
  Unreal conditionals वापरताना बरेचदा 'was' ऐवजी 'were' चा वापर होतो. याला संकेतार्थ म्हणतात आणि औपचारिक भाषेत याचा वापर होतो. 
  
  If I were rich, I wouldn't go to work.

• You can also use other modal verbs in the results clause - this might say how likely you think the results are.
   आपण इतर शक्यतादर्शक क्रियापदेही वापरू शकतो, त्यामुळे घटना घडण्याची शक्यता काय आहे ते समजू शकते.
  
  If I were young again, I could go back to college. - but I might do something else.
  If I were young again, I might go back to college. - but I'm not sure
