This lockdown is due to the faster than expected spread of the Omicron variant.

The story
A four-week coronavirus lockdown has come into force in The Netherlands.
All but essential shops have shut until mid-January, as well as bars, restaurants and cinemas. Schools and colleges will also remain closed.
The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the Omicron variant was spreading faster than feared.
