Tejali
Hello! ऐकलंत का? Listen Hereमध्ये तुमचं स्वागत. बीबीसीच्या बातम्या तर तुम्ही नेहमी ऐकता, पण या भागामध्ये या बातम्यांमधळे वेगवेगळे आपण जाणून घेतो. मी तेजाली आणि माझ्यासोबत आज आहे टॉम आणि फिल.
Tom
Hi I am Tom! Hi everyone!
Phil
And I am Phil, hi!
Tejali
आजचा आपला विषय आहे संगीत. आजच्या काळात संगीत फार पटापट तयार होतंय ना. What music do you like Tom?
Tom
I like rock music. It has good vocals.
Phil
I like everything. I prefer streaming. It makes it easier to access music.
Tejali
Vocals म्हणजे गाण्यातील गायकाचा आवाज. Streaming, आपण इंटरनेटवर गाणी ऐकतो तेव्हा ती डाऊनलोड होऊन मग ऐकू येतात, या प्रक्रियेला म्हणतात streaming. Did you know, some people believe that streaming music online is actually changing the songs people write?
Tom
I did hear that some songs are becoming faster. I wonder why?
Tejali
आजची क्लिप आहे बीबीसी रेडिओ4च्या You and Yoursमधली! संगीत तंत्रज्ञानाचे हे प्राध्यापक काय सांगतायंत ते ऐका. गाण्यांवर होणारे परिणामाबद्दल ते काय म्हणतायत?
Insert
I think that, you know, one of the things that’s driving this, there are a number of things. They’re all radio, they’re all singles designed for radio playlists. Radio playlists are extremely important factors in, you know, judging the success of a track and obviously do feed into the kind of commercial success of a track.
Phil
So, he mentions that radio playlists are important factors.
Tejali
A playlist म्हणजे गाण्यांची यादी, जी तुमच्या आमच्या मोबईलमध्ये नेहमी असते. And he says that radio playlists affect the commercial success of a song, right?
Tom
Correct! Commercial success refers to how successful something is commercially, or how much money it makes. The opposite is commercial a failure. With success we use ‘of’, so he’s talking about the commercial success of a track.
Tejali
गाण्यासाठीच अजून एक शब्द आहे a track. पुन्हा ऐका. प्लेलिस्टमधल्या गाण्यांचा व्यावसायिक यशावर कसा परिणाम होते ते सांगतायत. ‘And obviously’ नंतर ऐका.
Insert
Radio playlists are extremely important factors in judging the success of a track and obviously do feed into the commercial success of a track.
Phil
He said ‘feed into’.
Tejali
To feed into something म्हणजे योगदान देणे. आता हेच बघा ना, हा कार्यक्रम करण्यासाठी आपण वेगवेगळ्या संकल्पना देत असतो.
Phil
Exactly!
We could also use it in a more physical way. Rivers, for example.
Tejali
जसं गोदावरीला तिच्या विविध उपनद्या येऊन मिळतात.
Tom
Let’s listen to his sentence again. How does he pronounce ‘one of the’ in ‘one of the things’?
Insert
I think that, you know, one of the things that’s driving this…
Tom
In connected speech, he says ‘one of the’. Things, the noun, is stressed. Say it with me.
the
one of the
one of the things
So, playlists are one of the things making tracks commercially successful.
Tejali
पुढचं ऐका, आणखी कुठल्या गोष्टींमुळे गाण्यांवर influence म्हणजे परिणाम होतो?
Insert
But then there’s the influence of streaming services like Spotify, where if, uh, if a track isn’t played for at least 30 seconds then it doesn’t register a play.
And if we don’t hear the vocals then we might not carry on listening?
Absolutely, yeah. That’s the theory, to get through to the lyrical content and get through to that first chorus.
Phil
He said streaming services.
Tejali
Streaming service म्हणजे तुमच्या मर्जीप्रमाणे हव्या त्या वेळी इंटरनेटवर गाणी ऐकायची किंवा पाहण्याची सुविधा. पण ही सुविधा का असते? ‘If a track’ नंतर पुन्हा ऐका.
Insert
But then there’s the influence of streaming services like Spotify, where if, uh, if a track isn’t played for at least 30 seconds then it doesn’t register a play.
Tom
“It doesn’t register a play.” This means that the streaming services only register-- that someone listened to a track if they listen for longer than 30 seconds!
Phil
And this determines the commercial success of the track!
Tom
So, the theory, or idea, is to present listeners with vocals and a chorus more quickly, as it will make them want to continue listening!
Tejali
‘Might not’ नंतर ऐका.
Insert
And if we don’t hear the vocals then we might not carry on listening?
Phil
She said ‘carry on’, which means ‘to continue’. I don’t think we have enough time to carry on!
Tejali
आपली वेळ संपत आलीये! तर आज आपण streaming, commercial success, playlist, feed into, chorus and lyrics हे नवे शब्द शिकलो. किती छान लक्ष देऊन ऐकलंत तुम्ही, Bye!

commercial success
Commerce is a noun with a similar meaning to trade. The adjective is commercial. If something is commercially successful, it means that it makes a profit or is well-received by businesses and customers.
The commercial success of a song is determined by how much money it generates.
We can also use the adverb commerciallywith the adjective successful.
The last album she released was very commercially successful.
to feed into
To feed into means ‘to contribute to [something]’. It can have a literal or figurative meaning, depending on the context. Into is always one word with this phrasal verb.
Many smaller streams feed into the River Thames, which flows through London.
The poor salary, the long hours and an unpleasant working environment all fed into her decision to leave her job.
first conditional + might
Normally, the first conditional is used to suggest probability. The structure normally uses will.
If it rains, we will get wet!
One sentence from today’s episode provides an example of the first conditional using ‘might’.
…if we don’t hear the vocals, then we might not carry on listening?
Using might or may suggests possibility. It doesn’t imply that something is going to happen (unlike will).
Why are songs getting faster?
