ਅੱਜ ਦਾ  ਐਪੀਸੋਡ ਸੈਮ ਦੀ ਬੈਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਉਹ ਬੈਨ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਲਈ ਕਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਕਿਥੇ?

I’m at the bus stop!

ਬੈਨ ਹਾਲੇ ਵੀ ‘bus stop’ , ਬੱਸ ਅੱਡੇ ਤੇ ਹੈ।

Oh dear. While we wait, let’s talk about what ‘at’ means here. Ben said ‘I’m at the bus stop’.

Yes Sam! ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੈ।  ‘At’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੋਈਏ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰ ਉਸ ਜਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹੋਈਏ। ਤਾਂ ਬੈਨ ਚੱਲ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬੱਸ ਅੱਡੇ ਤੇ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਹੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ‘at the bus stop’। ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਖੜਕਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਹਾਂਗੇ...

ਠੀਕ ਤਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਉਹ ਬੱਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਲਈ‘on the bus’, ਸ਼ਬਦ ‘on’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਆਮਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਆਵਾਜਾਈ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

Yes, we use ‘on’ for bicycles, buses, trains, planes, ships… But, careful, because we use ‘in’ for cars and taxis.

ਚਲੋ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ‘on’  ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਇਸਤੇਮਾ ਉਸ ਚੀਜ਼ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਵੇ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੈਮ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਚਾਹ ਦਾ ਕੱਪ...

And my feet are on the floor.

And we are on the 6th floor…and Ben is not… Let me call him again.

Ben, you’re so late. Where are you?

Ben
I’m in the office. But where is everyone? Where are you?

Sam
Oh, Ben! Which building did you go to?

Oh no! ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਬੈਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਬਿਲਡਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ‘in the office’ ਅਸੀਂ ‘in’ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਬਿਲਡਿੰਗ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਤਲਬ ਕਿਸੇ ਚਾਰਦਿਵਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੋਈਏ।

Exactly! We are ‘in the studio’, ‘in a building’, Ben is ‘in the wrong office’, and my coffee is ‘in my cup’. ‘At’, ‘on’ and ‘in’ can be confusing words because we use them to talk about time, as well…

ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਕਿਥੇ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਿਰਿਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ‘be’ ਦੇ ਅਲੱਗ ਅਲੱਗ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

Now, the pronunciation isn’t difficult, but it’s still useful to practise. We usually put more importance on the words after ‘at’, ‘on’ and ‘in’. Like this – repeat after me:

I’m at the bus stop.

I’m on the bus.

I’m in the office.

Thanks, Sam. ਚਲੋ ਹੁਣ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਸੋਚੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲਿਫ਼ਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਹੋਗੇ? ‘The lift’ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋਗੇ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਚੈੱਕ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੈਮ ਦਾ ਜੁਆਬ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਣਾ।

Did you say the same as Sam? ਹੁਣ ਕਹੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਰੇਲਗੱਡੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ‘the train’ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਿਸ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰੋਗੇ।

ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ? ਹੁਣ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਦੀ ਰਿਸੈਪਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਦੋਸਤ ਦੁਪਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਖਾਣ ਲਈ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਰਿਸੈਪਸ਼ਨਿਸਟ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਾਕ ‘your friend’ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ‘reception’ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿਓ ਅਸੀਂ ‘reception’ ਨਾਲ ‘the’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ ਹੁਣ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ‘at’, ‘on’ ਅਤੇ ‘in’ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
