It certainly is! Hello everybody! Today we’re going to be talking about floods and flooding.

A flood ਮਤਲਬ ਹੜ੍ਹ। ‘Flooding’ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੀ ਹੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। Here’s today’s question:
UK’s Channel 4 News ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਵੀਹ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਕੁੱਲ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਲੋਕ ਹੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ?
a) 50 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ
b) 1 ਬਿਲੀਅਨ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ਿਰ
c) 2 ਬਿਲੀਅਨ

ਜੁਆਬ ਸੁਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ BBC Radio 4 ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ Costing the Earth ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਇਹ ਕਲਿੱਪ ਸੁਣੋ। ਜਿਥੇ ਕਿ ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ ̓ਚ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਏ ਹੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੱਭਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਰਚਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।

Mark Gimmett is just one of the thousands of people who watched as their homes and belongings were ruined this summer by the worst floods in sixty years. The weather was, of course, the main cause, but 75% of our land is farmland and today Costing the Earth is asking if intensive farming is contributing to the problem and if farmers should be asked to change the way the farm to help avoid more floods.

So, the presenter mentioned how, mainly, the weather was responsible for floods but she also suggested that farming might have something to do with it, too.

Sian
I’m not sure, to be honest. People seem to blame farming for lots of things at the moment. It’s not the farmers’ fault that rivers are swollen, is it?

‘Swollen’ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਸੁੱਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਉਸਦੇ ਅਸਲ ਆਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਨਦੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ‘swell’ ਹੋਈ। ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਇਹ ‘swollen’ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। We can also use ‘swell’ and ‘swollen’ for injuries, right?

Sian
Correct, it’s not a very positive adjective, generally. Why do you think she blames farming, anyway?

Tom
She spoke about the quality of land used in farming. There’s an idea that as soil becomes eroded, it becomes less able to hold water.

‘Eroded’ ਮਤਲਬ ਖੁਰਨਾ And, as soil erosion occurs, ਯਾਨੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਖੁਰਨਾ, it can loosen the land, too.

Sian
Exactly! So with more water and less stable land, is it any surprise that rivers burst their banks?

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
Good point! ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ‘bank’ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ‘To burst’ ਮਤਲਬ ਫਟਣਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ‘river has burst its banks’ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਨਦੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਕੰਢਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਭਾਵ ਪਾਣੀ ਕੰਢਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਵਹਿਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ।

Have any rivers near you ever burst their banks?

Yes, recently Yammuna bank bursts. It can be very dangerous when river banks burst. Do you have any protection from flooding in the UK?

Tom
Well, in London we do have a flood barrier to make sure we aren't swept away but it’s getting very old.

ਰਾਜਵੀਰ
Ah! ‘To sweep away’ ਮਤਲਬ to remove completely. A flood barrier ਮਤਲਬ ਹੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ, even our county has flood barriers but sometimes during heavy rains these barriers fail to control water flow.

Sian
Anyway, talking of flooding around the world, can you give us the answer to today’s quiz?

Certainly! Channel 4 News ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੁਆਬ ਹੈ ‘C’। ਪਿਛਲੇ ਵੀਹ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 2.3 ਬਿਲੀਅਨ ਲੋਕ ਹੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।

That’s more or less a quarter of the world’s population! Maybe flood barriers aren’t working well enough and we need some other preventative measures?

‘Preventative measures’ ਮਤਲਬ ਰੋਕਥਾਮ ਦੇ ਕਦਮ ਜਾਂ ਪੈਮਾਨੇ।

I know what measures I’m going to take to prevent my stuff getting damaged in floods.

Tom
What’s that Sian?

Sian
I’m going to buy a flat at the top of a very tall building. Perfect!

Tom
But if the soil around the building gets eroded, the building will be dangerous and it will be unstable…

Sian
Ah, oh yeah…

Never mind, you’ll have to find a new plan, Sian.
