Picture: Terry Wogan interviews Delia Smith in 1985
Terry Wogan was already well known on the BBC when his chat show Wogan was relaunched on 18 February 1985 as part of a revamped BBC One schedule that also saw the start of EastEnders. Wogan went out live at 7pm, three times a week, from the Television Theatre in Shepherds Bush. The intention was to bring some of the relaxed charm of Terry’s radio show to the format. Wogan thrived and proved his worth immediately after he tripped and fell on the first show, recovering to ad lib with guest Elton John.
The first guest was Wendy Richard, known as the glamorous Miss Brahms, but about to star as Pauline Fowler. Elton John was followed by impressionist Rory Bremner and Tina Turner. Wogan also questioned the audience about Dallas – one of the favourite topics on his radio show – emphasising the programme's relative informality. During its 7 year life Wogan featured many memorable moments, with appearances from David Icke, David Bowie and many cast members from Dallas and Dynasty.
Terry Wogan was knighted in 2005 for services to broadcasting, in particular his tireless work for Children in Need. He died – to much national mourning – in January 2016.
