Stuntman Mark Stanner

Stuntman Mark Stanner is in that box!

West Show Stuntman

What do chains, handcuffs, fire and the West Show have in common? Jim Cathcart spoke to stuntman Mark Stannage to find out.

Every year at the West Show the main arena plays host to a variety of events, including the horse classes of the show and the Grand Pageant, in 2007 though there was something a bit different as a man was hanging from a crane in a straight jacket, and all to entertain the crowds.

Mark Stannage has been working as a stuntman for over 15 years and in that time has made his name appearing both in his own show and in various film and TV roles including small appearances in Titanic and The Bill.

He brought his family stunt show to the 2007 West Show having last appeared in Guernsey as a part of a different stunt team several years ago, but this visit was a family affair.

Along with his son, and stuntman to be Aaron, and his wife and brother, Mark performed three different stunts in the main arena over the course of the show including the Exploding Box, the Exploding Coffin and the Straight Jacket Escape made famous by Harry Houdidni.

Mark had his sights set on being a stuntman since he was 14 years old and finally got his chance when he was injured by a professional stunt performer who asked Mark to join his show, and from there he never looked back and now runs his own show.

Jim Cathcart and Helen Spoelstra spoke to Mark and his family in their specially built caravan before their performance...
