Feelgood Hit Of The Summer

Third Time Lucky's 'final' gig, alongside emo-rockers The Escape Fall, kicks up a storm at The Golden Lion on Saturday 14th of July 2007.

The crowd in The Golden Lion tonight didn't seem to be the sort who would be fans of the kind of emo-rock played by opening act, The Escape Fall. So, when they started out, the initial reaction was largely ambivalent from all but a very small group at the front.

This reception didn't deter The Escape Fall however as they rocked their way through opener 'This Ends Tonight' and received a generous round of applause.

Throughout the rest of the set, made up of a mixture of covers and original material, the bar slowly emptied, but this didn't stop the band carrying on regardless. With the addition of second guitarist Ben Wilson, The Escape Fall's style of cross over rock had an even deeper sound tonight which sent them in a more interesting, but still accessible, direction than in the past.

This accessible sound, when mixed with the easy confidence displayed by vocalist Sam Meader and bassist James Le Tissier, combined to make The Escape Fall a band who could really be big if they got the chance. Though it might be best for them to stick with younger crowds who seem more receptive to this style of music.

By the time The Escape Fall left the stage The Golden Lion was worryingly empty, but in the time it took Third Time Lucky to find a new guitar, after Danny discovered his was broken while setting up, the pub had filled up nicely just in time for the band to launch into what we thought would be their last ever set.

While Third Time Lucky didn't sound the best they ever have tonight, precision is not what this band are all about, they are on stage to have fun, and give us on the floor a good time, and in that they succeeded fabulously.

Half way through the set tonight centre stage was given to guitarist Mim for a moment as she made an announcement to the assembled mass. She revealed that this would in fact not be Third Time Lucky's final show and that it was in fact a full reformation, and to prove it they launched into new song '3 Squeaks'.

Taking all the old elements of pop-rock and indie-punk that have made this band what they are, and adding a bit more of an edge, it went down very well and hinted at exciting things to come.

With this news exciting the crowd further, the second half of Third Time Lucky's set was even more energetic as the band blasted through favourites 'Nothing Left', 'Louise' and 'My Best Day', before ending on coup de grace 'Forever And A Day'.

That wasn't it, however, as this was followed by an encore of dance along crowd pleaser 'Knees Up', which left the audience happy if still wanting more.

While tonight wasn't the tightest Third Time Lucky have ever played, they did what they do best brilliantly, as everyone rammed up against The Golden Lion's small stage had a great time and left with a big grin on their faces.

And with the promise of more of this sort of feel good rock to come, Third Time Lucky will hopefully be able to claim their place among Guernsey's most entertaining bands.
