Guernsey didn't have to wait long for the first gold medal of the 2007 Island Games. It came in Judo and the winner was Roberto Mascherucci who overcame Hjaima Johannesen from the Faroe islands in the final. The waiter from Milano's pizzeria says he hopes it’s the first of many.

The Sarnians didn't have top wait long for the second gold - Tobyn Horton was the quickest around the Cycling criterium course and he was proud to become the first man from Guernsey to win the event at the games.

In athletics and success on the track for Lee Garland in the steeplechase. He says he’s proud of his achievement but nothing beats a gold.

Earlier in the day… Guernsey’s first medal in Rhodes came from the men’s half marathon runners who took bronze in the team event.

Steve Dawes, Dave Holmes and Paul Ingrouille all finished within two and a half minutes of each other with Dawes being the first Channel Islander across the finish line.

Also in action was Sark's only athlete at the Games, Michael Doyle, who was pleased with his 16th place… and Alderney's Nicky Neal was just grateful to make it to the finish line.

Guernsey's gold medal defence in the table tennis team competition got off to a flying start with a close victory over home team Rhodes.

And travelling one thousand five hundred miles to beat old rivals Jersey was the perfect way for the Guernsey team to end their first day of group matches.

There was disappointment in the team event for Alderney's men’s tennis squad - they went down to number 2 seeds Rhodes and have been knocked out of the competition. But it wasn't just the competition that was hotting up - the air conditioning is still to be fitted in the table tennis hall.

The island's women's football team's Island Games is all but over after they lost their opening game against Bermuda. That was the second win for the Carribean side and means they have an unassailable lead at the top of the table, with only one going through to the knockout stage. The Sarnians game against the West of Isles is irrelevant.

Guernsey's men's volleyballer's went into the match against tournament favourites Bermuda as massive underdogs. The Sarnians lost their first match of the group stage against Gotland yesterday and still need a win to qualify for the knockout stages.
