TimelineYou are in: Guernsey > History > Timeline > 16th Century ![]() Elizabeth College 16th CenturyThe Bailiwick Timeline moves into the 1500s which saw the burning of witches, colonization of Sark and Guernsey Privateers attacking the French. 1546Building of fortifications begins in Alderney as Henry VIII wants the island to become a Naval Base. 1547Channel Islands show their support for Henry by getting rid of the Catholic faith. 1548A Calvinist faith begins to emerge in the islands. 1556Protestant and suspected witch Catherine Cauches and her family are burnt at the stake in St Peter Port. 1560Elizabeth I grants Royal Charter to the islands confirming Guernsey's rights to free trade with England. 1563Elizabeth College is established and first principal is appointed. 1565Jersey's Helier de Carteret is allowed to colonise Sark by Queen Elizabeth. It later becomes a Royal Fief in return for keeping at least 40 men on the island. 1566After pirate vessel John of Sandwich was wrecked the Captain John Higgins was hung at St Martin's Point. 1570Sir Thomas Leighton comes to Guernsey to strengthen Castle Cornet. 1576The Principles of the Calvinist movement are introduced into all Guernsey parishes. 1583A statement of Guernsey's laws are approved by the Privy Council. 1585First printed sea atlas including charts and information on the islands produced by Abraham Waghenauer. 1588Tunnel completed at Sark Harbour in Baie de la Motte. 1598Guernsey Privateers are given permission to attack the French by Elizabeth I. last updated: 18/12/2008 at 10:17 [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
