The Bailiwick Timeline moves into the 1500s which saw the burning of witches, colonization of Sark and Guernsey Privateers attacking the French.

1546

Building of fortifications begins in Alderney as Henry VIII wants the island to become a Naval Base.

1547

Channel Islands show their support for Henry by getting rid of the Catholic faith.

1548

A Calvinist faith begins to emerge in the islands.

1556

Protestant and suspected witch Catherine Cauches and her family are burnt at the stake in St Peter Port.

1560

Elizabeth I grants Royal Charter to the islands confirming Guernsey's rights to free trade with England.

1563

Elizabeth College is established and first principal is appointed.

1565

Jersey's Helier de Carteret is allowed to colonise Sark by Queen Elizabeth. It later becomes a Royal Fief in return for keeping at least 40 men on the island.

1566

After pirate vessel John of Sandwich was wrecked the Captain John Higgins was hung at St Martin's Point.

1570

Sir Thomas Leighton comes to Guernsey to strengthen Castle Cornet.

1576

The Principles of the Calvinist movement are introduced into all Guernsey parishes.

1583

A statement of Guernsey's laws are approved by the Privy Council.

1585

First printed sea atlas including charts and information on the islands produced by Abraham Waghenauer.

1588

Tunnel completed at Sark Harbour in Baie de la Motte.

1598

Guernsey Privateers are given permission to attack the French by Elizabeth I.
