The island of Sark

15th Century

The 1400s saw the War of the Roses and invasion by French forces. It was also a time for new beginning which saw the first meeting of the States and the appointment of the first Governor.

1412

Newly crowned King Henry V evicts the Monks from St Michel in Sark. Sark was very inhospitable at the time with no decent harbour and only a small drinking water supply.

1425

Guernsey ships assist in the blockade of Mont St Michel.

1455

The War of the Roses begins. Channel Islanders fear losing independence under the French rule of Pierre de Breze and fight against the invaders under the leadership of Philip de Carteret.

1468

Edward IV grants further Royal Charter to the islands includes a grant to wool which encourages the textile industry.

1471

Edward IV separated Guernsey and Jersey into two 'Bailiwick' administrations.

1481

First recorded meeting of the States of Guernsey. A Papal Bull grants neutrality to the islands encouraging trade in times of war.

1486

Edmund Weston is appointed as the first Governor of Guernsey. End of the War of the Roses.
