14th Century

Guernsey becomes more independent under Otto's rule as the the Bailiff, Royal Court and other local officials shoulder more responsibilities. Islanders began to think more about security and were again at the front line in war.

1304

Following the loss of the original seal Guernsey and Jersey's Royal Courts receive their own seals.

1305

Toll on shipping introduced by King Edward to repair the jetty and help rebuild the town is the earliest known local legislation.

1309

Jerbourg Castle is begun. The Guernsey Market moves from the Castel to St Peter Port.

1328

Death of Otto de Grandison. New Warden John de Roches is appointed.

1330

Young Edward III takes the throne and sends justices to the Islands to hold a court session to look at the rights of the islanders.

1335

Islanders train as a defence force - forerunner of the Militia.

1336

David Bruce, a Scottish refugee in France, leads a raid on the islands and causes considerable damage to Alderney and Sark.

1337

Formation of the Guernsey Militia. Privateers harass the islands.

1338

Start of the Hundred Years War. Guernsey, Alderney and Sark are captured by the French led by Robert Bertram, Lord of Bricquebec.

1340

Edward III is victorious at the Battle of Sluys. Walter de Weston is sent to liberate Guernsey and by the end of the year only Castle Cornet is in French hands.

1341

King Edward confirms the privileges, immunities and customs of the Islands but the rushed document did not specify what these rights were.

1342

The French, led by a Spaniard Don Louis and bolstered by Spanish and Genoese forces, fight the English at the naval Battle of Guernsey, an indecisive encounter when the fleets were forced apart by a storm.

1345

Castle Cornet surrenders to the besieging English forces.

1356

French raid captures Castle Cornet but it is retaken by a relief force from Jersey.

1360

The signing of Treaty of Bretigny sees the French recognise Edward's claim to Aquitaine and gives up all claims to the Channel Islands.

1361

Guernsey's first hospital is built.

1372

Owen of Wales attacks Guernsey with six hundred men. A pitched battle takes place at what is now known as Battle Lane. Islanders withdraw to the castles for defence after sustaining losses. Owen leaves after the Prior of the Vale offers a ransom.

1394

St Apolline Chapel is built by Nicholas Henry.
