Agnes was originally from China and she settled in Gloucester years ago. In the last ten years, she's noticed that she uses more of her own language when she meets Chinese people whereas before it would be English. She thinks there's the change in herself and society around her. It's a sign, she believes, that we recognise the diversity of our country - it's OK to speak your own language and be proud of who you are. One example is the search for the appropriate words to teach her children the right values from her society. Lisa is originally from the United States and she tells the story of how the way you talk can differ in a relatively short geographic distance. She grew up only 12 miles from where her Mother did in Philadelphia. Her mother is considered to be a well spoken intelligent woman from the city while Lisa was (and, she says, still is!) considered to be a hick from the country... Apparently this is something quite rude about a woman, according to Elsie. In the following interview, Elsie talks about some of the unique phrases from the Forest of Dean.
