+ Over 500 people turned up to the 2002 Asian Mela, where the guest of honour was film and TV star Saeed Jaffrey.

+ In 2001 the Mela was in the finals of the Race in the Media Awards - entertainment category and only just lost to Radio One.

The sights, sounds and tastes of the Indian sub-continent were on offer at the Guildhall on Sunday, in one of Gloucester's biggest celebrations of Asian life and culture.

Manny Masih joins in with the Bhangra dancing

The Asian Mela 2003 was the fourth event of its kind and was hosted by Manny Masih, presenter of BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Sangeet Mahal programme, and Saima Mohsin of BBC Points West.

This year's Mela was bigger and better than ever before, with music and dance galore plus exhibitions by Asian organisations and businesses.

Admission to the Mela was completely free but tickets were required to attend the following events:

Yoga, Indian Cookery Demonstration, Indian Head Massage and Indian Modern Dancing and a screening of the film Bend It Like Beckham.

Parmjit Dhanda, the county's first Asian MP, also made an appearance and BBC radio Gloucestershire's Manny Masih joined in with the crowd as they enjoyed the banging Bhangra music.
