Tips for buying trees
Trees grown in pots or containers are the most convenient to use, because you can buy and plant them at any time of year when the soil is workable. The drawback is large specimens are expensive.

Trees that have been dug up from a nurseryman’s field in winter and sold with bare roots are usually the best value for money. But they are not always available in a wide range of varieties, and can only be planted while they are dormant, between November and late March.

When shopping for your tree, don’t just grab the first one that comes to hand. Have a good look at it and run through a simple checklist of requirements before making your purchase:

Things to look for:
  • A straight stem or trunk with unblemished bark
  • Strong, unbroken branches that spread out evenly
  • If you are buying a container-grown plant in summer check for healthy foliage.
