Alan's no space garden
We mentioned earlier the importance of ‘auditing’ the garden to see what you’ve got to work with and to identify potential problems.

When you start, always look at the big picture first and leave the finer details until last.

Start by working out how the sun moves across the garden, so you know which areas are in sun or shade at particular times of day. Think which existing features you need to keep, such as big trees or mature hedges which would be hard to replace, then work out a design that works with them.

Yes, I know concrete would solve the problem in one go, but you’re a gardener so we’ll be doing the job with plants… the no-time sort.

As I said, it’s all about using what you have to the best advantage. First look at the aspect; if you want to be able to sit out in the evening for an after-work drink, choose the area that catches the late afternoon sun. An area that’s in the shade all day may not be so bad if you are someone who burns easily, but most people prefer to sit in the sun.
