Faced with the ruins of his country in 1945, Strauss memorialised Germany’s past by quoting Beethoven’s ground-breaking ‘Eroica’ in his romantic elegy for 23 string soloists. The power of Beethoven’s third symphony and of its revolution remains undimmed on every listen - a totem of heroism and triumph.
