Colin Currie is a BIG fan of Dutch composer Joey Roukens. He’s called the work he’s playing here ‘one of the repertoire's great concertos… resplendent in colour and life, it is 40 minutes of adventure and emotion.’ Enough said. There’s plenty of life, too, in our wonderful conductor Chloé van Soeterstède, who’ll bring energy and insight to Mozart’s Don Giovanni overture, and Beethoven’s Second Symphony. Written at the onset of his deafness, it’s a symphony that’s both sunny and powerful, as if the composer is enjoying flexing his ever-developing musical muscles.
The concert is broadcast as part of a week of music from Scotland on BBC Radio 3; it is presented by Jamie MacDougall.
