We start and end this evening in Bohemia, with two pieces that vividly conjure up images of their composers’ homeland: Smetana’s effervescent overture and Janácek’s heart-on-sleeve love letter to his hometown of Brno. In between, we’re off to France, as virtuoso Louis Lortie stars in two Saint-Saëns specialities before Berlioz’s calm-before-the-storm orchestral interlude.
