  2. Anxiety 'seen as weakness' says Malikpublished at 15:47 GMT 3 November 2016

    Evening Standard

    Zayn MalikImage source, AP

Zayn Malik has said having anxiety is seen as being "like a weakness".

The former One Direction singer pulled out of several live performances earlier this year because of what he called "extreme anxiety".

In an interview with ES magazine, external, Zayn said he felt he had to speak out about the condition:

    Quote Message

Anxiety is something people don't necessarily want to advertise because it's seen, in a way, like a weakness. For me to pretend that I didn't have anxiety would be fake. I speak about it so that people understand that it doesn't matter what level of success you have, where you're from, who you are, what sex you are, what you do - you can still experience these things.

In the same interview, Malik was asked whether he would have signed his record deal with One Direction knowing the pressures of fame.

    Quote Message

I probably wouldn't have - I would've waited a couple more extra years. Just so I had that time to just get my head around being a famous person. I've never been able to have, what's the word? Anonymity. If I could go back, I'd have a few more years of anonymity.

He added that he was "very ignorant at 17 - blind beyond my years".

  3. Meat Loaf talks back surgery and musicalspublished at 15:38 GMT 3 November 2016

    Meat LoafImage source, PA

After his win at the Q Awards last night Meat Loaf had a busy day today as he was on hand for the launch of Bat Out of Hell - The Musical.

Created by his writing partner of 42 years Jim Steinman, Meat told the BBC he was hoping he could talk Jim into letting him have a part in the show.

    Quote Message

I'm hoping I can talk him into letting me be the bad guy on Broadway. I've had back surgery so I can't do anything at the moment but by the time it gets to Broadway I'll be ready. I have four months of physical therapy to do - the doctor is screaming right now 'why is he in London?'

Meat said he's had to turn down two film roles because of the physical therapy but does have another two films he hopes he can do after his back is sorted. And one of them will be in London.

The musical will have its world premiere at the London Coliseum on 20 June next year after previews at the Manchester Opera House.

Andrew Polec, who has the lead in the musical, is performing songs from the show at the Coliseum at 17:00 GMT today if you happen to be in London. Meatloaf will be watching - that won't be intimidating at all for him!

You can watch the full Facebook chat with Meat and Andrew Polec, alongside our reporter Laura Turner, here, external.

  5. Music is losing all its characterspublished at 14:58 GMT 3 November 2016

    Sex PistolsImage source, Getty

Not our view, by the way. That's the opinion of former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock.

We bumped into the bassist on the red carpet at the Q Awards and, reflecting on a year in which we have lost the likes of David Bowie and Prince, he said: "They were so good. They provided a bench mark for other new bands.

"I'm a bit too old to go and check out every latest thing at the back of the NME these days but I do think that there's not the same characters. Music's become a lot less characterful."

Midge Ure said that 2016 had been a "devastating year for music", while Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess said that jumping in a van and touring Europe would become a lot more difficult for new British bands after Brexit.

Debbie Harry confessed that she and her new touring buddy Cyndi Lauper, "have some stories to tell".

And finally, Debbie's other good pal and bandmate Chris Stein told us he's a fan of Major Lazer and that we should also check out a band from Atlanta, called Starbenders. So we did

And now so can you - by clicking here, external. Well, if it's good enough for Blondie...

  7. Eagles of Death Metal documentary detailspublished at 14:13 GMT 3 November 2016

Jesse Hughes, Josh Homme, Colin HanksImage source, HBO

More on the Eagles of Death Metal now and details of a new documentary about the band have been revealed.

The HBO film sees the band recount their experiences before and after the terrorist attack at their concert at the Bataclan in Paris that claimed 89 lives.

It's being directed by Colin Hanks (Fargo actor and son of Tom) who became close to the band seven years ago when he made his first documentary, All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records.

Apparently Hanks "felt compelled to document the band and their fans, to try and make something positive from something truly unfathomable".

Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (our friends) will delve into the close relationship between the band and their fans and the relationship between singer Jesse Hughes and EODM's co-founder and childhood friend Josh Homme.

The film also features Bono and The Edge from U2, who invited the band to return to Paris and perform with them shortly after the attack.

It will be screened on HBO in February next year.

Carl Barat (right) & Pete Doherty

Libertine Carl Barat was out in Camden as well for the Q awards last night.

And he told us of the pride he feels for his song-writing partner Pete Doherty, who will headline the re-opening of Le Bataclan on 16 and 17 November.

The venue is opening its doors again to the public for the first time since 89 people were killed at an Eagles of Death Metal gig almost exactly one year ago.

Pete had been living in the French capital of recent years and Carl said: "He is so exctied.

"It is one of the biggest things for him. He's so proud and so excited, I hope I can be there to support him.

"He asked me to come and play with him actually, but I'm not going to be here. But plans change and I might be here."

So...will you be there or not Carl?

  9. Gaga turns Perfect Illusion into piano balladpublished at 13:25 GMT 3 November 2016

Lady Gaga, external has given a typically understated... ahem... performance of her track Perfect Illusion on a Japanese TV show.

She turned it from a desert-set rocky 80s pop banger to a stripped back piano ballad.

But that didn't mean she stripped back her vocals. By any definition.

Following her performance, which you can watch below, she said: "I used to always be afraid to show certain sides of myself. But with this music, I cannot hide. Because I wrote it from the deepest parts of my soul".

Some more now from the red carpet at last night's Q awards, where M.I.A was in the house to pick up her gong for Innovation of Sound.

Now, it's well documented that the London/Sri Lankan rapper has had her troubles getting into the US.

The Paper Planes songwriter said this summer that being unable to gain a US Visa was preventing her from getting on a real plane to tour the States and that her September release Aim would be her last with her American record label.

Now the Tamil super-star has waded into next week's US presidential election debate, labelling candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as "basically the same".

She told BBC Music "I'm a pessimist. I don't like having to be at this moment where we have to choose between Hillary and Trump. I don't even like that it's got that far.

    Quote Message

"Everyone is saying this is really progressive: a women v someone terrible, but from where I am I don't really see the difference.

"I just wish they'd started this discussion four years ago and got someone else running, like Bernie (Sanders) or a third party that is actually different.

"It is very difficult to see the difference, apart from gender, between them."

That M.I.A US tour should make for an interesting one then, if indeed it ever happens.

It certainly won't be happening anytime soon as she told the press she plans to take a break from touring to allow herself time to "get beat up by life again." Adding that she could fill her time by "starting a taxi company" or "making kettle chips".

Whatever she ends up doing we're sure it won't be dull.

It's the song that Bruno co-wrote with Adele for her album 25 - in an interview last week, he called her a 'diva'. In the nicest possible way...

    Bobby VeeImage source, AP

The funeral of 60s popstar Bobby Vee has taken place in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Best known for hits including Rubber Ball and The Night Has a Thousand Eyes, he died last week at the age of 73 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

An instrumental performance of Vee's hit song Take Good Care of My Baby was played at his funeral.

Hundreds of mourners attended St John's Abbey Church where his cousin Harold Velline gave the eulogy.

    Quote Message

As I read the numerous articles (about Vee's passing), I was struck by the fact that just about every positive adjective was used to describe Bob. Decent, hardworking, humble, generous, sweet, sincere, accomplished, kind, loyal, helpful, happy — the list goes on. But none of us here today need to read that list. We've experienced it.

  17. Lil Wayne apologies for Black Lives Matter dismissalpublished at 10:20 GMT 3 November 2016

    TMZ

    Lil WayneImage source, Getty Images

Rapper Lil Wayne has said sorry after he dismissed the Black Lives Matter campaign in the US during an interview with ABC News' Nightline.

The New Orleans rapper said he does not feel connected to the movement, saying "I'm young, black and rich. If that don't let you know that America understands black lives matter these days...I don't know what it is."

His comment provoked a pretty strong reaction on social media.

Now, he's told TMZ he became "agitated" after the female reporter asked about his daughters being subjected to misogynist abuse.

"From there, there was no thought put into her questions and my responses.

"Apologies to anyone who was offended."

  18. Q Awards: And the winners are...published at 09:50 GMT 3 November 2016

    Jack GarrattImage source, AP

Jack Garratt, Bastille, The 1975, James Bay, Muse and U2 were the big winners at last night's Q Awards at the Roundhouse in Camden.

Some of those winners used their acceptance speeches as a chance to attack secondary ticketing websites.

Which was kind of awkward as the whole event was sponsored by Stubhub.

Bastille's Good Grief was selected as the Best Track of the year, while BBC's Sound of 2016 Jack was named Breakthrough Act. See, we told you he was alright!

He told us though last night that he sees himself as a mere flag-bearer for new acts, rather than a winner.

"It's an amazing feeling being respected and appreciated by your peers and an award like this being voted for by the public adds a notch of sentiment to it.

"But it's more important that it symbolises that there is new music out there and it does need to be listened to, equally as importantly as the music that already exists. I'm just lucky enough to be holding the thing!"

    Quote Message

"I don't see myself a wining anything. I've been given a flag to hold on behalf of me and a front line of hundreds of other people who are just trying to make the best music they can.

    The CharlatansImage source, PA

Album of the year went to the 1975 for their epically-titled and Mercury-shortlisted I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It.

The ceremony was opened up to the public for the first time in its 26-year history and The Charlatans became the first band to ever perform there, after collecting a gong for their Classic Album Tellin' Stories.

Elsewhere M.I.A., Meat Loaf, Ray Davies, Madness, The Edge and Blondie were all recognised for their contributions to music .
