  7. Fight the Power: the backstorypublished at 17:51 GMT 2 December 2016

“1989” Chuck D roars on the opening to Fight the Power, rather fittingly Lamacq is playing it now.

Did you know the song was originally created at the request of film director Spike Lee? You did? Well, we’ll continue anyway, Lee was looking for an anthem for his film Do the Right Thing which was released in, yes you guessed it, 1989.

Dancing at the discotheque in 1989? You must remember this classic from Inner City, reaching number 4 in the charts.

Lammo is playing it now. Any excuse for a good dance.

  9. Richard Hawley on Lamacqpublished at 17:27 GMT 2 December 2016

Along with his hangover remedies (make a note for around Christmas, folks) Richard Hawley just spoke to Lamacq about 1989, starting a band and Inspiral Carpets - he picked Joe as his track to play.

Do you have a favourite track of theirs?

  16. How to put on a rave in London in 1988published at 16:28 GMT 2 December 2016

The People's History of Pop, external interviewed Joe Wieczorek, who started Club Labrynth raves in 1988 before moving to the Four Aces in Hackney.

He started out as a skinhead and football casual before falling in love with rave in 1987. Here he talks about the early days of organising raves.

"We made an appointment at Bethnal Green station to see the chief fire officer, to find out about what we would be required to do to put on an event, an overnight event. When they took us in there, they left us there on our own, sitting in the chief’s office. I leaned over and grabbed a piece of headed notepaper, folded it up, put it in my pocket, asked him a few questions, slipped off and you know as much as it was the early days of computers, that was how we made our first fire certificate, with headed notepaper."

    Quote Message

We had forged insurance documents that said we were covered to hold a party

    Joe Wieczorek

"We had fire extinguishers and exit signs nailed to the top of the door. We’d started this event on a Friday night and the first one wasn’t actually called Labrynth, it was called 'Another Serious Wicked Rave’."

  18. Robert Smith turns 30 ...published at 16:19 GMT 2 December 2016

It’s not really 1989 unless we mention Disintegration, The Cure's standout album released in May.

Although, Robert Smith wasn’t in the best of spirits when writing it. Why? Apparently it was because the frontman was turning thirty. He thought all band members turned around their biggest hits before celebrating such an age ...
