Conductor Douglas Boyd leads a live BBC Radio 3 broadcast from the orchestra’s Salford studio. Boyd opens with the refreshing youthfulness of Britten's Les Illuminations, written by the then 25-year-old for the Swiss-born soprano, Sophie Wyss, who had settled in England. This piece marks the final flourish of Britten's love affair with the soprano voice.
We also hear Mozart’s Serenade in B flat - often known by the subtitle "Gran Partita".
