Musical magpies galore: Mendelssohn’s vibrant ‘last’ symphony weaves German cultural and musical motifs into something nobly stirring. It’s a perfect pairing with Prokofiev’s witty First Symphony which doffs its cap to Haydn and Mozart before running riot. Associate Conductor Alpesh Chauhan is at the reins, pairing these works with a flourish from Michael Tippett and Magnus Lindberg’s opener that pilfers musical history to its own brilliant ends.
