In the fifth programme of the series we met Faye, an Essex lass who desperately wanted to live the West End lifestyle, but her income just couldn't keep up. She loved to indulge in fine food, fine wine and fine clothes - and it was getting her in trouble.
Faye's lifestyle was about to catch up with her as the credit was running dry. Live-in boyfriend Tom had also had enough of Faye's spending, although he didn't know the extent of her financial mess as Faye freely admitted to lying about how much she spent.
That's where mum Linda stepped in. Linda learnt the value of a pound when she had to struggle to make ends meet after her husband left her homeless 20 years ago. But Faye wasn't too keen on taking mum's advice and the tantrums were looming from day one.
Faye thought nothing of spending £150 on a night out enjoying cocktails and canapés with friends, and she insisted on going out for a romantic meal with Tom at least twice a week at a cost of £80 per night. Add to this her love of designer clothes and accessories and you could see why her £20,000 per year income just couldn't sustain her lifestyle.
Watch the moment when the true extent of Faye's debt is revealed.
Tactics:
Linda leapt into action by confiscating all of Faye's credit and bank cards, and changing her mobile phone to pay as you go - a plan that didn't go down too well with Faye. Linda was adamant she was going to teach Faye the value of money and make her see the error in her ways.
Bank of Mum & Dad's financial expert Lawrence Gold paid the family a visit and set Faye a new budget. Lawrence warned that if Faye continued on as she was, in one year she would owe nearly £40,000. So, radical action was called for. The entertainment budget was cut from £600 to £250, health and beauty products from £200 to £50 and the clothes budget was slashed to just £100 per month.
Faye was keen to move to London when her and Tom's rental agreement ran out, but both Tom and Linda were worried that this would just be an even bigger excuse for Faye to spend. Tom decided the situation was getting out of hand, so he told Faye that if she moved to London he wouldn't be going with her.
Linda took Tom and Faye out to spend some quality time together, on a budget, but Faye wasn't taking to playing in the park, so it was down to the shops for a lesson on budget buying.
As they did some "serious shopping" it became apparent that Faye wasn't about to give up her designer threads for home brand items, so Linda moved from the clothes to the groceries by taking Faye to a local market to do her weekly shop.
Up the pressure:
Faye remained negative about the changes Linda was trying to make, so it was time for different tactics. If she wouldn't curb her spending, Faye needed to increase her income, so Linda got her an evening's work at a local pub.
After the initial worry over pulling a pint, Faye quickly got into the swing of things and admitted she rather enjoyed the night. She even said she would consider getting a second job.
Tom also laid on the pressure talking to Faye about the £7,000 she owed him and her plans to move to London.
It seemed it was all working. Faye decided to apply for a second job and signed another 6 month lease on her house - putting off the move to London. Tom was over the moon and was impressed that Faye was finally facing up to her responsibilities.
Moving ahead:
Time is a great test and not long after Bank of Mum & Dad left, things all went rather pear-shaped. Although she renewed her lease, Faye decided to make the move to London after all. Tom stuck to his guns and refused to go with Faye, so the pair have split.
Faye didn't get a second job and Linda was worried her daughter was moving even further into debt - so another Bank of Mum & Dad visit was called for.
Linda made the journey to London to move into Faye's new home for three days to see just what was going on. Faye's attitude to her mum's visit was no different to the first time and the complaining just carried on. But, it seemed her spending was on the improve.
Although she had made no drastic changes, Faye had cut down her spending in some areas and had met Lawrence's target of paying off £400 of her debts per month, which lead Lawrence to suggest that Faye could be paying off even more if she got a second job.
Keen on the idea that Faye could be clear of her debts in less than three years, Linda was again out trying to get Faye interesting in a second job. This time it wasn't the pubs she hit - it was the youngsters, hiring Faye out as a children's entertainer.
To finish the second Bank of Mum & Dad week Linda enrolled Faye in a kickboxing class, which she hoped would give her daughter something else to focus on in life and help build her self-confidence. After a hard workout Faye admitted it had given her a real boost and would be something she would enjoy doing after work - instead of hitting the shops.
So, mum leaves again, happy that the refresher course has done the trick and Faye is back to being positive about the future. Faye admits Bank of Mum & Dad has woken her up to just how much she is spending and she is setting her aims at being debt free in two years.
