Name: Andrew, 23.
Live: Manchester.
Financial situation: Owing £24,000 in bank loans and credit card debts.
Occupation: Creative Director at a hair salon.
Biggest money wasters: Entertainment! Andrew loved to eat out, drink out and play out at the swanky joints in Manchester.
In programme three we met Andrew, a country lad who decided city living was for him. He lived in an upmarket flat in Manchester city centre and the temptation of the local pubs and clubs was just too much for him to resist.
But Andrew's overspending was catching up with him. His bank refused to lend him any more money after he failed to pay back his mounting debts, so he had to fake the high life by borrowing off friends and maxing out his credit card.
Enter dad Max, who left his country lifestyle for one week to move in with Andrew. As a former soldier and policeman, Max was used to an orderly life and his finances were no different. Would Andrew be able to cope with Max controlling the money flow for a whole week? If things hit one too many hurdles there was always Andrew's mum Pauline on the sideline, ready to fly in from Spain to help out her son.
Andrew regularly forked out over £1,000 per month on going out with friends. Looking good, whilst he went out, added another burden to the purse strings to the sum of around £900 per month. Although Andrew worked at a hair salon in the city, his £21,000 per year just couldn't cover his spending habits.
Tactics:
Andrew's dad felt that part of his son's problem was boredom, so his plan was to show Andrew that you can have a good time, and look good, on a budget. As he looked through Andrew's bank records Max realised that a lot of the money was just being thrown away on phone bills, clothes and nights out.
First step was to sort through Andrew's wardrobe in an attempt to prove that he was wasting way too much money on looking good. But Andrew wasn't having any of it and refused to consider selling any of his precious threads. After hitting a brick wall, Max finally threatened Andrew with the ultimate torture - confiscating his mobile phone for the week - so eventually Andrew gave in and decided that a few "accessories" could be given up.
Next it was out on the town on a shoestring budget. Andrew usually took a cab to the pubs and clubs of Manchester, yet lived within walking distance, so with the cash he saved on the taxi fare Andrew was allowed to have a drink. But with prices of a pint of beer hitting the £2.55 mark, Andrew was stuck with a half, as Max downed the pint!
Money troubles:
Although Andrew was fairly casual about his financial situation Bank of Mum & Dad's expert Lawrence Gold wasn't so blasé. As he went through the figures, Lawrence found that Andrew's extravagant lifestyle was causing him to overspend a whopping £2,200 per month.
Two thousand pounds alone were being spent on going out, clothes and cosmetics per month. Add to that a rent of £550 and average phone bills of £135 and the problem became evident.
Watch the moment when the true extent of Andrew's debt is revealed.
But as Lawrence and Max tried to show Andrew his flippant overspending couldn't go on, it seemed Andrew was just going through the motions rather than changing his way of thinking.
It was time to call in the cavalry in the form of Mum Pauline, who flew in from Spain to join the pair.
Pauline got straight down to business, and gave Andrew a few quick lessons about living on a budget. Within a day she had him cooking a meal that cost £4, working at a car wash earning £5 per hour and even putting the mobile phone away for a few days.
Plan of attack:
Andrew had been living well above his means since moving to Manchester and although he had a good job in a hair salon it wasn't enough to cover his lifestyle. Pauline and Max decided that part of the solution was for Andrew to find more ways to make money.
Andrew used to work as a David Beckham look-alike, which earned him good money but his lack of football skills limited the jobs he could take. Pauline decided enough was enough and signed Andrew up for a training session with a local club. If he continues with his training to improve his skills Andrew should be able to apply for more jobs as a look-alike.
The other side of Andrew's life is his hair styling, so mum and dad decided he should expand his repertoire and move into the world of personal stylists. With the help of Bank of Mum & Dad Andrew was able to prove his skills by giving former Emmerdale actress Danielle Henry a complete makeover.
As well as earning some extra money Andrew was also told he needed to cut down his spending, fast. Lawrence set a new monthly budget that would get Andrew back in a more positive financial situation.
The rental budget was cut from £550 per month to £300, leisure activities down from £1,145 to £300 and the clothes buying had to stop for the time being, with no money being set aside for shopping in the new budget. If Andrew stuck to Lawrence's plan it would free up £400 per month for debt repayments.
Update:
One month later and things are looking brighter for Andrew. He has moved out of his city centre flat and now shares with a friend, thus saving £300 per month. He has stayed within his new "going out" budget, hasn't caught a cab in four weeks and hasn't been clothes shopping once!
He realises he was out of control with his spending but has managed to find some extra styling work to boost his income.
