BBC Devon Online message board helps Ed on his epic journey |
Edward Genochio is looking forward to continuing his journey to Shanghai, after receiving a replacement bike.
Edward Genochio, 27, from Exeter, has cycled about 16,000km (10,000 miles) since leaving his home in March. His journey was cut short in August when his bike was stolen in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator. Water's going to be a bit of a problem in the desert and I'm probably going to have to carry about 15 to 20 litres with me | | Edward Genochio |
He has been stranded there for a month because there are no suitable bikes on sale in the country. But a replacement has now been shipped out for him. Ed believed his adventure could have been brought to a premature end when his bike was stolen by a Mongolian horseman late at night and his tent was torn in half. The adventurer was asleep when the thief tied a rope to his machine, which was locked to his tent, and rode off with it. But now his replacement bike and a new tent have arrived, he is preparing to get back into the saddle.
A contributor to Ed's message board here on BBC Devon Online offered to help after reading of the Exeter cyclists plight. We put Ed in touch with Matthew Zamoyski of DHL International who shipped the bike out to him free of charge. "I've got a few tweaks to carry out on the bike and a bit of shopping to do to replace some things that were stolen along with the bike, but I should be ready to leave by Saturday afternoon," says Ed. He reckons the next stage could well be the toughest of the journey. The 600 to 700km (373 to 435 miles) route is south through the Gobi Desert. He said: "There's only a road for the first bit of the journey, then it becomes just a series of sandy tracks with lots of branches, but no signposts. "Water's going to be a bit of a problem in the desert and I'm probably going to have to carry about 15 to 20 litres with me. "Perhaps one of the good things about the month delay is that time has moved on and hopefully the worst of the heat has passed. "It could turn out to be the best time to make this stage of the journey." Take a look at the photo gallery for more pictures.
