| | This is a story about marriage. Depending on who you took down the marriage aisle in Jane Austen's day, there was really only one thing that mattered - a large estate and lots of money.
Love didn't really enter the equation.
Jane Austen wrote the novel while staying in Derbyshire - in Bakewell - and there are many situations in the book which are widely believed to have been based on actual places and events.
The BBC decided to tell the tale in 1995 - and chose the original home of the book for many of the locations.

Longnor
Although Jane Austen's village of Lambton is widely believed to be based on 17th century Bakewell, it is Longnor, about 6 miles south east of Buxton, which was used for shots of the village.
Chatsworth House
The stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and it is thought Pemberley, the fictional residence of Mr Darcy, is based on the historic property.

Jane Austen wrote: "The eye was instantly caught by Pemberley House, situated on the opposite side of the valley into which the road into some abruptness wound.
"It was a large, handsome, stone building standing well on rising ground, and backed by a ridge of high woody hills; and in front, a stream of some natural importance was swelled into greater, but without any artificial appearance. Its banks were neither formal, nor falsely adorned."
Sudbury Hall
This magnificent National Trust Property was used to provide the the interior shots of Pemberley House in the BBC production.

Lyme Hall
This grand stately home (though technically in Cheshire) stands on the A6 between Buxton and Stockport. It provided the exterior shots of Pemberley House. Mr Darcy and Elizabeth strolled through the 1,400-acre park enjoying superb views of the Peak District.
