How can I improve my vocabulary?

There has been a lot of research on this topic and there are many different language learning strategies so you have to find what works best for you.

There are lots of sources of new language; these might include TV or radio programmes, movies, songs, newspapers, textbooks and dictionaries.

What do you do when you read a word you don't know?

Once you have discovered a new piece of vocabulary it is important that you find a way to remember it and a way to use it correctly.

It can be helpful to write down new vocabulary in a notebook. You can organise the words:

  • alphabetically
  • by topic
  • by word family

You might also want to write down information such as:

A notebook and pen
Do you have a vocabulary notebook?

  • the pronunciation
  • the definition
  • the part of speech
  • word partnerships

Once you think you know a word, you need to practise using it.

This will help you remember the vocabulary, and practice does make perfect.
