Learn to measure capacity with Numberblocks
Nine and friends learn that the amount of stuff that fits inside any container, tall or wide, is called capacity.
What is capacity?
How can four cups of blockfruit juice fit inside one jug?
Numberblock Nine has the answer: each cup holds just one cup of juice, but the jug is bigger. It can hold up to four cups of juice!
The amount of juice the jug can hold is its capacity. This means how much space is inside the jug.
How to measure capacity?
We can measure capacity by filling the jug with equal units of juice. Each cup holds the same amount of juice, so we know that if the jug is full after four cups of juice, the jug's capacity is four cups.
Easy Activity
You and your little one can experiment with capacity at home. You'll need a cup and a larger jug.
You might get a little messy or damp with this experiment, so use an apron or have a towel handy in case of spills.
Using water fill the cup and pour it into your jug. Find out how many cups of liquid can fit in the jug by counting how many full cups can be added to the jug before it overflows. One you have that number, you know the capacity of the jug in cups.
Ask your child how many cups of water can fit in the jug and work together to find out the answer.
