Learn about the area of a shape with Numberblocks

Numberblock Seventeen is hosting a big area art challenge. Numberblocks One, Three and Four need to cover a canvas with shapes, without leaving any gaps, to find the area.

What is the area?

Numberblock Seventeen gives One, Three and Four the challenge of using different shapes to cover their canvas without leaving any gaps.

He explains that their canvases are in the shape of a rectangle, and the space inside is the area. Using the different shapes, they can find out the area of their canvas.

Canvas One - Circles

Numberblock One uses red circles to fill in her canvas and learns that the rectangular canvas is as big as two circles. But she also points out that there are gaps between the shapes, which means the area is bigger than two circles.

Numberblocks One and Seventeen look at One's filled canvas, showing two red circle shapes. They don't fill the area, but they look lovely.

Canvas Two - Squares

Meanwhile, Numberblock Four has covered all the space on the canvas with green squares. There are no gaps on the canvas, which means the area of the canvas is eight squares exactly

Numberblocks One, Four and Seventeen look happily at Four's green canvas, perfectly filled with squares without gaps. Meanwhile, Three looks on, unimpressed.

Canvas Three - Triangles

Finally, Numberblock Three put her triangle shapes on her canvas in a way that left gaps between the shapes and put the triangles on top of each other. This means that even though it's a very creative piece of art, we can't work out the area

Numberblock Three regards her canvas, filled with overlapping yellow triangles, and looks uncertain.
