How were fireworks invented?
Did you know fireworks were invented over 2,000 years ago in China—completely by accident?Legend says a cook mixed together charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter (that’s a fancy word for potassium nitrate) and—POOF!—it exploded!
People soon discovered that if you stuffed this magical mix into bamboo tubes and threw them in the fire, they made loud bangs that scared away evil spirits. Later, clever inventors added metals and powders to make bright colours and sparkly effects.
When fireworks finally came to Europe, everyone went wow!—and the world’s been celebrating with beautiful sky explosions ever since!
