- In very bright conditions it's difficult to record the details in the shadows and highlights in the same shot. One solution is to create silhouettes. These work by losing shadow details but they need a strong shape.
- In this picture of Souter Lighthouse, near Sunderland, the guardian's head gives scale to the picture whilst the colour of his shirt contrasts with the lighthouse colour.
- Including people in a view helps to humanise and give context to the location by showing who uses the space.
