Sunday, May 8th, was the 60th Anniversary of V.E. Day and this year Haworth echoed to sights and sounds evoking the momentous time when World War Two in Europe was drawing to a close.
From Land Girls to washer women and GIs to the BBC West Yorkshire website team with our cameras, hundreds of visitors descended on Haworth over the weekend. 'George Formby' was just one of the entertainers making an appearance. Many came along on Saturday hoping to see the flypast from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Dakota but it was not to be - bad weather stopped the plane making the journey to Haworth. However, some careful observers who looked up into the sky on Sunday may have been lucky enough to see a German bi-plane. Also on Sunday 'evacuees' from local schools, complete with battered suitcases and gas masks, arrived by steam train, and we went along for the ride. Those who were not on duty carrying out essential war work were able to make the best of the wartime entertainment which carried on long after the sun had set.
