The procession reaches Sowerby Bridge (the rushbearing cart is top left!)
Every September people flock to Sowerby Bridge to take part in a very unusual spectacle. This year we followed the rushbearing cart as it made its way around the town's churches and pubs. While it was hot thirsty work for the men pulling the cart, pride of place must go to the brave "maiden" riding along on top of the rushes!
Morris and sword dancers came from as far away as Derbyshire and Newcastle to help the cart on its way. And, this being West Yorkshire, the brass band was at hand to lead the procession.
The Bradshaw Mummers from Halifax also came along to show how St George slew the dragon with quite a few laughs along the way! The Festival organisers had warned: "Those of a nervous disposition or lovers of serious acting are advised to look away." They certainly weren't wrong!
