It was donated to the church by Herbert Ingram, Founder of the Illustrated London News (born in Boston 1811..died 1860 in the Lady Elgin Great Lakes disaster 1860) and was allegedly an 'Old Master' when donated in the 1850s. It has hung above the chancel since except for a period recently when the Chancel was being repaired. There was an attempt to get it authenticated (via the Antiques Roadshow) and cleaned but both were vetoed by the new vicar....enquiries made by Parish Council members lead to the belief that it may have been painted by one of the 19th C's notorious fakers but because of the vicar's ban on publicity we do not know for sure. It is possibly called the 'Ascension of the Cross'...can you help...it it is an old master the church needs to deal with security (and needs the funds) and insurance...... Jonathon Brackenbury.

Thanks so much for your comments. I have sent the information you provided to the Public Catalogue Foundation, who will endeavour to make any necessary changes to the data for us.
Have you spotted any more familiar artwork on the site? And have you watched any of the Guided Tours, such as this one, yet?

Many thanks,

If the site is going to include any works generally displayed to the public, though not owned by them, are you going to include, for example, the collections of the Church of England, the Royal Academy?

After receiving an email in May by a Canadian owner of a Gregson painting dated 1904 with an identical signature I had to abandon my theory that the artist was Alfred Gregson of Derby who died 1895.
Soon afterwards, yet another approach by an A W Gregson painting owner. So who is A W Gregson?

He, like them, came from Cerne Abbas. My grand father lodged with Joseph when he was an apprentice in London. I grew up with a couple of Joseph Clark originals and several Victorian prints. On this site as elsewhere the attributions are confuses.
Does anyone have any further information about either artist? It would be gratefully recieved. I am nearing completion of a catalogue of Joseph Clark's works - mainly Victorian / Edwardian realist images of rural domestic scenes - and a short biography. If anyone would like a copy when it is finished I would gladly forward it electronically. There are some two hundred titles with hot links to images of some 75 works.

I am very proud to be a part of it as my self portrait was purchased in 1984 just as I was completing my foundation level. As a married mother of 2 I didn't have a lot of money for brushes and I had one fairly small sable brush to paint with until I sold my painting and I bought a much larger sable and nylon mix which cost me 50 pounds. I never had a photo of it and haven't seen it for over 20 years...thanking you once more from Lesley Collins.
