Get a Squiggle On: Update

Fiona Mahon|16:35 UK time, Monday, 18 July 2011

Busy morning in writersroom HQ - our readers have been in the office reading through the entries for our CBeebies new writing competition, Get a Squiggle On, which closed last week.

We've had over 400 entries - recurring themes that have emerged so far are aliens, detectives, kids entertainers, carnivals/circuses, technology, tooth fairies, amnesiacs and biscuits!

Many of the entries have been beautifully presented with colourful moodboards and quirky illustrations - one even came with a dragon costume, and another with a banana (?!).

A big thank you to all of you entered - it's been heartening to see that a large number of scripts have come from first time writers. We're really enjoying reading your entries and will report back when we have more news on the shortlist.

Good luck!

I hold my hand up to biscuits!

  • Comment number 2.

I cant sleep I am so excited! If I don't get anywhere with this its fine! I really enjoyed writing for the first time. Sparkle and Shine forever!!

  • Comment number 3.

Good luck, Anthony! And come on The Flowers!

  • Comment number 4.

Has anyone heard anything? I have suddenly become somewhat obsessed.

Wrote it one day prior, I didn't proofread before getting kindly local printer to produce two copies shoving one in the envelope without a moment's thought (to be fair there was not a moment to spare). A quick read of second copy confimed worst fears - kots of Smellinng histeaks ... Anyone fancy a wager?

    Best of luck to all.

  • Comment number 5.

I'm not sure anyone will have heard results yet as shortlist notified on 29th July (this Friday!). But of course I've also become obsessed despite knowing this. Nail biting times, eh?

Good luck scrivere and everyone else!

  • Comment number 6.

I am very excited! I just want the phone to ring so bad! first attempt at writing and I am very proud .. i know it prob needs more work.. but to get the chance to develop it would be ah maz ing! I work in reception and nursery class! I read it to my class and put on voices and they all loved it! I just hope the bbc do!! I seem to be checking this blog all the time!! I feel like I am on the xfactor!! Just wanna get through to the next round!! Good Luck everyone!! x

  • Comment number 7.

Anthony... I hope this doesn't sound cynical, but don't get too excited. This must be my six thousandth attempt, yet my phone remains stonily silent. Of course, that just might mean I'm rubbish! I think the trick is, once you've sent something off, try to forget about it and get on with the next project. Er..... of course if I was taking my own advice I wouldnt be reading this blog:-)

  • Comment number 8.

Yeah, I'm on tenderhooks too! Anthony, just getting a script completed and sent for the first time is an achievement and we should all know if we've got through very soon so best of luck!

  • Comment number 9.

    watttt was yourrs lotsss aboutt???????????

  • Comment number 10.

and did u all do the 30 pagges i only did 8 becausee only saw the competition 3 days b4: / do u think they will exceppt this : / loool

  • Comment number 11.

At the question and answer forum in Salford, it was suggested that thirty minutes was probably too much for a pre-schooler. I know my little boy couldn't concentrate for thirty minutes, though having said that, he's only two. My script was just under twenty pages.

  • Comment number 12.

I think at the heart of pre school is the word exciting! Working with 80 of them daily i have learned that! I guess its rubbed off on me. If my script it not what the bbc are looking for its fine. I enjoy it! And if it don't work this time.. i will try again! just like i teach my kids! :)

  • Comment number 13.

Jane, I completely agree that thirty minutes seems too long an attention-span for a pre-schooler; my script was twenty pages long. I think we've all done ourselves proud by getting a script completed and sent in, so lots of luck to everyone - can't wait to see the next stage shortlist. Fingers crossed! : D

  • Comment number 14.

My script was 15 pages long. I also thought 30 minutes seemed a bit long but have been worrying that mine was a bit short. Well hopefully we will find out tomorrow so we can all stop fretting. Good luck everyone.

  • Comment number 15.

Best of luck everyone! If anyone hears please post on here!! Im literally going to be refreshing writers room all the time tomorrow! (I know im still excited! cant help it!!) x

  • Comment number 16.

where do u look to c who got thru?????????????

  • Comment number 17.

i think they will post it on this blog.. looking at previous competitions.. Good Luck!

  • Comment number 18.

    okayy thankss u 2 ne1 hearrd yettt???

  • Comment number 19.

I have not heard! Checking emails all the time.. and here! I guess they call the 25? So i don't really want an email! :) x

  • Comment number 20.

The suspense is killing me.... lol

Maybe the 25 won't be chosen till the 31st, they could still be sorting through the 400 entries...

  • Comment number 21.

Only 10 people out of the 400 entrants have commented.... *thinks*

  • Comment number 22.

I reckon woman are a little better at waiting for results than men. I remember buying twenty seven pregnancy testing kits before day 11 when I was waiting for my first baby. It was good training!

  • Comment number 23.

Anyone heard anything yet? I'm guessing if you haven't heard by now the news isn't good.

  • Comment number 24.

Yes, reading the competition terms and conditions it states that unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted. I guess that means anyone who hasn't been emailed earlier today isn't through.

  • Comment number 25.

I think you're right GreenTea but because I received an email saying they'd received my entry (which I hadn't expected but did appreciate) I presumed they had decided keeping entrants updated about the status of their entry was a possibility. Of course, then I woke up! Sending out hundreds of emails requires loads of work, so not very likely. I still think phone calls would have been made and am resigning myself to not getting a phone call this weekend. Oh well. At least writing the script was fun.

  • Comment number 26.

Well, they could just write one email and do a mail merge to all the applicants which would only take a few minutes. I can appreciate that writing feedback to over 400 people is impossible but it would be nice just to receive something.

  • Comment number 27.

the first email says they will let everyone know.. so just have hope! My hart has been in my mouth every time the phone went today.. was not nice!

Still best of luck everyone.. x

  • Comment number 28.

oh just searched cbeebies into twitter to see if anyone has mentioned hearing and i saw a guy say that cbeebies office all moved out today for the building..

far to busy to contact? or writers room a separate department? im getting desperate now! x

  • Comment number 29.

    Hi Everyone!

I entered a previous call for scripts competition when they had over 1,700 entries. I didn't get through but I got a confirmation email when they received my script and the 'Thanks but no thanks' email along with the 1,650+ who didn't get through!

As there's only 400+ of us here I'm sure we'll all get some acknowledgement either way. Hope that puts all your minds at rest!

  • Comment number 30.

Amanda, Thanks for that comment.... that's really heartening to hear. Anthony.... don't get desparate .... take the dog for a walk, go to Tesco and treat yourself ..... it's a lovely day, sit in the park and eat ice cream...... get away from the computer. That's what I'm going to try and do. Jane:-) ps.... I'm going insane too... and when no results were announced yesterday I put the baby to bed early and had one too many drinks!!!!! Shame on me.

  • Comment number 31.

  • Comment number 32.

    Jane! I

  • Comment number 33.

I think my comments are not coming up because i am writing making a heart! I love you jane!

    Saw on twitter..

We've got the CBeebies team in the office today, having a second read of the Get a Squiggle entries #squiggle

That was wednesday so i think we might be out of luck guys!!

    x

  • Comment number 34.

I too had seen that the CBeebies team were in on the 27th but was pushing it to the back of my mind. Hmmph. Reality kicking in .... I too think it's game over as far as this competition is concerned. I was re-reading my script and still like it. I was thinking of rewriting it with more laughs for older children and submitting it to CBBC and then if it's rejected again Citv. As my mum keeps telling me.... you don't have to wait for a competition. Good luck for the future Amanda, Gregg, Scrivere, Vitamin 8, Manaellaaa, Joylud, Stephjsmith, Rachael, GreenTea... but especially Anthony:-) Jane blogging out.

  • Comment number 35.

Vitamin8, Anthony, Jane and all, (really wanted to write 'et al' but didn't want you screaming "Pretentious. Gob. Shiit" at your screens on a Sunday morn').

It pains me to disagree with Jane (aka' voice of reason') as I choose to cling to hope - hope perhaps unfounded yet ardent, the source of which might be traced to the line "We hope to notify you all about the next stage of the competition by the end of July"

    You see - 'hope'!

Jane notwithstanding my naiveté, I shall also take cue from you (or more specifically the wise woman from whom you fell), and work on improvement before submitting through other channels.

    Best of luck.

By the way if one of those that got through were to post and say so, it would certainly help us saddos' move on.

  • Comment number 36.

Its frustrating. I am not giving up till i get a no.. sound like an x factor reject. Its ture tho..If this does not go to plan, i am going to make it a story book! The children in my class really enjoyed my story even with no visuals... and to impress 3-5 year olds without pictures it must be ok!

    Keep the faith!

    :)

  • Comment number 37.

So has no one heard yet? I am with you Anthony, I have my fingers firmly crossed that they are just taking time making the decision. It was my first attempt too and I was so happy to get finished and posted. I had only heard about it 3 days before it closed. Hopefully they will see the comments and put us out of our misery.

  • Comment number 38.

Hi folks! No, I haven't heard anything and am feeling fairly resigned to not getting a good result (any result?) but like you I do need some kind of closure. Found this blog really useful, so lots of thanks to everyone who's been on here. You've been so hopeful and positive. Wishing you all lots of luck in whatever you do next (like your book Anthony?). I did like my script, but knew it had more holes that something really holey. :(

Oh no. Now I'm starting to talk like one of my characters... Time to sign off.

    Take care all! :)

  • Comment number 39.

Scrivere like you I am clinging to hope. I keep checking back here and have been looking on twitter and I can find no sign that anyone has heard. So fingers crossed there is still a slim chance for us yet.

Anthony good luck with turning yours into a story book if you decide to. My script was based on a picture book I published recently. After a number of rejections from publishers I found a website, Lulu.com, where you can self publish and sell on Amazon. My sales haven't been huge yet but it is really nice to see your work out there for people enjoy.

Good luck everyone with your future projects.

  • Comment number 40.

I just dont wanna kill my characters! I believe in them soo much..they are in my head walking around dying for the world to meet them! thanks everyone :) x

  • Comment number 41.

just me still checking at 10:50 at night :) ok... xx

  • Comment number 42.

and at 11:55! hope we hear monday! good luck everyone! x

  • Comment number 43.

Hey all, thought you'd be excited to hear this breaking news from BBC Writers Room Tweets (less than 10 minutes ago):

We will be letting all the Get a Squiggle On entrants know if they've been shortlisted or not this afternoon #squiggle

    Yikes! Good luck everyone (:

  • Comment number 44.

Almost crunchtime and I'm not talking biscuits!

  • Comment number 45.

hi was this today u saw on twitter? so nobodys heard then how do u follow them on twitter??

  • Comment number 46.

You search bbcwritersroom on twitter then click to get to the page. It's on there I can confirm that I still haven't heard anything - so maybe late afternoon?

argh, it's worse knowing that the answer is coming! lol

  • Comment number 47.

Why have I signed back in when I was so adamant I wouldn't take another look .... now I'm stressed all over again. I'm going to send the writers room the bill for my pyschotherapist. And where's Anthony gone?

  • Comment number 48.

Today is the day Jane.... I'm sure he'll turn up at some point :D

  • Comment number 49.

I'm a friend of Anthony's and he's working as an usher in the local theatre. I saw hiim lunchtime and he has his phone on stand-by but can't go on the internet! He's trying to forget about it but is still on pins, I think! I'm also anxious as the minutes tick by. Was chuffed this morning when they said they were announcing it this afternoon, as I was still in with a chance. Now, I'm not so sure . . . good luck everyone!

  • Comment number 50.

    https://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_time_of_the_day_is_considered_as_afternoon_and_evening

I had to check how long I will be refreshing my e-mail and this page for ... 8pm!

jeez another 4 hours and 15 minutes and it's officially evening. ;l

    ;) lol

  • Comment number 51.

    me, me, me, I'm through!

"Our readers very much enjoyed reading the first 10 pages of your script and consequently your script was passed on for another look to the CBeebies team.

We're delighted to tell you that your script has been put through to the next stage of the competition where it will be read in full by members of the writersroom team.

Only 44 scripts have got through to this stage - so whatever happens you should be proud of your achievement so far.

We will be making a decision on the writers we would like to invite to the CBeebies Masterclass by 5pm on Friday (5th August)."

  • Comment number 52.

Good luck to all of you!

Well I was one of the unlucky ones unfortunately – although I should perhaps take comfort in knowing I made it to the second lot of readers.

A bit of advice… I once spoke to a gentleman who has written many programmes for the BBC. His first 20+ scripts were rejected.

Once making it as a professional writer, the BBC said to his ‘So what other scripts do you have?’

He ended up having quite a few (previously rejected) scripts produced. So don’t give up, and lets hope the same thing one day happens to us.

  • Comment number 53.

simon cowell - its a no.. your not through to boot camp! :( boo!

good luck everyone... least life has some normality till next time!

  • Comment number 54.

    "Dear Writer,

Many thanks for your submission to 'Get A Squiggle On'. We had over 400 entries and really enjoyed the weird and wonderful characters and worlds that writers managed to come up with.

Creating an original idea for young children is very difficult and the competition was very tough. Though we enjoyed reading the first 10 pages of your script, unfortunately we have decided not to take it any further.

Many thanks for your submission and all the very best with your writing in the future.

    BBC Writersroom "

    Gutted. Seriously.

Well done to everyone, and the best of luck for those whol will still have to wait to hear by Friday.

  • Comment number 55.

Now we know first hand exactly how those X factor rejects feel ...... I'm bitterly disappointed... and totally exhausted. Bye all:-)

  • Comment number 56.

ahh rejection .... horrible. the part of writing i dont like.

    good luck all :)

  • Comment number 57.

Scrivere I got the same email as you so it's game over for me too. Good luck to those who are through to the next stage.

  • Comment number 58.

How can I contact the get a squiggle on team. I gave them the wrong email address. I added a dot in between my name should be heidihowarth, not heidi.howarth

Could someone from the 'get your squiggle on' team take pity on me and send me an email to let me know either way as I have not had anything.....obviously. Feeling very daft!

  • Comment number 59.

Oh well, it's a no for me as well. Never mind, I'll take consolation in the fact I'm signing the contract for a commissioned feature-length script tomorrow. Wagons roll!

  • Comment number 60.

Has everyone had their email as I haven't had anything yet. I got the email sayng they had recieved my submission but nothing since. I still don't know if i'm in or out.

  • Comment number 61.

    BBCWritersroom tweeted:

"We hear some of our #squiggle emails aren't getting through - email us at [email protected] with your name & script title & we'll reply"

  • Comment number 62.

Congrats to all who got in and also to Amanda for you feature.

  • Comment number 63.

    Thanks, Kev!

  • Comment number 64.

Just got my email. I didn't get through. It's a no this time. :-(

  • Comment number 65.

I'm one of the candidates that didn't win this competition, but for future reference, I'm curious to know the calibre of scripts that got through. Might we get a taster of the winning scripts somewhere on the Writersroom?

  • Comment number 66.

Jane, I completely agree, it was great to be able to read the winning entries for the #Hackgate competition - more of the same, please, WR.
