A big change on the way

We've had some very cold days and nights this week. Last night, the temperature at Llysdinam near Newbridge on Wye in Powys dropped to minus eight Celsius. While yesterday, John Goodger who runs a weather station at Velindre near Glasbury recorded his coldest day of the year so far with a top temperature of only minus 1.7 Celsius.

If you don't like the cold, there is a big change on the way. It's going to turn milder tomorrow but wet and windy. 10 to 20mm of rain is expected locally 30mm in places with a risk of localised flooding. The heavy rain, accompanied by strong to gale force south-easterly winds, will make for some poor travelling conditions.

Tomorrow evening the rain will clear to heavy showers. The weekend will be breezy/windy with a mixture of sunshine and scattered showers; the showers heavy in places with a risk of thunder. Temperatures will be higher than recently, 7 to 10 Celsius, but feeling chilly in the wind. Little if any frost is expected over the weekend with temperatures overnight staying above freezing, typically four to eight Celsius, so you shouldn't need the de-icer!

The Geminid meteor shower, the grand finale of astronomical events in 2012, reaches a peak tonight www.meteorwatch.org

The best chance of seeing them tonight will be in north west Gwynedd, Conwy and on Anglesey where the sky will be clear for a time. Elsewhere low cloud will spoil the view with mist and fog forming.

Surfers can expect big waves in the Bristol Channel this weekend, especially on Sunday and on Monday too with low pressure over the Atlantic.

Although the waves are likely to be messy with brisk onshore south-westerly winds. The sea temperature is currently around 10 or 11 Celsius.
