Links and locations

Thursday is Links Day for the X-Ray team. The links are the PTCs - remember that one from the blog last week?

Rhodri and I record the introductions to the reports and the responses following them. They're the glue that helps the programme flow from one item to the next, linking it all together.

So, how do we decide where we go? Well, the location is usually discussed in the days before filming. Sometimes we may be interviewing someone about a report in the programme, and that will steer us towards a certain area.

We may have a story where it would be relevant to have the presenter in the same location to introduce it. This week we're reporting on surfers who fall victim to thieves when they leave their car keys hidden so they can go out in the water. So we're heading to Porthcawl for the links.

It always helps when we know we'll get a variety of backgrounds in close proximity. If we find a busy shopping area, not far from a green space, near local landmarks, we're a happy crew!

Next on the list to work out: who will be directing? I've just conducted a quick straw poll in the office to find out if it's perceived as a good gig or the short straw. Apparently the prospect of a day filming with Rhodri and me isn't too terrible, but it all depends on the weather. If it's pouring with rain and freezing cold it can make for a long, difficult day.

There's a lot for the links director to think about. They will be constantly checking with the X-Ray office for any updates from companies as they respond to our investigations, and the links will often change during the day. Sometimes they will have to be re-shot if there are significant late developments in the story.

And the programme has to look as good as it can. The X-Ray team can often be spotted lugging kit around various town centre locations, looking for a variety of the best shots.

The pressure's on too. The links have to be spot on. Any errors and they can't be broadcast.

So Porthcawl this week. Where next? Perhaps somewhere near you? Let us know - we're always open to ideas!

X-Ray is on at 7.30pm. If you'd like to get in touch with the team call 03703 334334 or email xray@bbc.co.uk.
