Hurricane Joaquinn brings humidity and showers

After a dry weekend, the weather has now changed with low pressure bringing some rain, heavy showers and stronger winds. It’s the first rain we’ve had for quite a while but with south to south-easterly winds it is feeling warmer and more humid. There was ground frost in places last week but Monday night was mild with temperatures remaining above 10°C.

Tuesday started dry with some sunshine in the north but showers spread quickly from the south continuing throughout the day. The showers will be heavy in places perhaps with thunder. However some drier, brighter spells are still likely in the afternoon. The wind will fall light with temperatures reaching highs of between 16 and 19°C. Tuesday night will bring more rain and showers and stronger winds too.

On Wednesday heavy rain is likely in north Wales, especially on high ground. We are expecting 20 to 40mm of rainfall; perhaps as much as 40-60mm in 24 hours. Wednesday will start windy but the rain will clear and it will dry and brighten-up from the west with some sunshine. The wind will gradually ease and it will feel cooler and fresher with highs of 13 to 16°C. Wednesday night will be dry and cool with light winds allowing a few mist and fog patches to form.

Thursday and Friday look dry and settled with light winds thanks to high pressure. Hurricane Joaquin which has now moved away from Bermuda will weaken as it moves eastward over the central and eastern Atlantic later this week. We’re not 100% sure yet which track the former hurricane will take. It could turn northeast towards Iceland or head towards Iberia and southern France which seems the more likely outcome.

At the moment, it looks like it’ll miss the UK and we could end-up with a dry weekend with south-easterly winds and a block of high pressure over Scandinavia. However, given the uncertainty it would be worth keeping a close eye on the forecast over the next few days.
