Heavy rain for the west and northwest of Wales

Derek Brockway

I was on Barry Island yesterday and the weather was lovely and it felt very warm in the sun.

Cardiff was the warmest place in Wales with a high of 20.2°C and RAF Valley on Anglesey was the sunniest place with over 10 hours of sunshine; ideal for walking in Snowdonia with a clear sky and light winds.

Mind you, the day started chilly with a ground frost in places with a low of 0.9°C recorded at Swyddffynnon in Ceredigion.

Much of Wales has been dry today but breezier with fresh to strong winds in the north and west and there is a change on the way. A cold front will move south and east tonight and tomorrow bringing a spell of very heavy rain followed by clearer, colder air, sunshine and a few showers.

The Met Office has issued a warning of heavy rain for the west and northwest of Wales. 25 to 50mm of rain is likely but in the northwest over 80 to 100mm is possible with a risk of surface water flooding in places and difficult driving conditions.

The heavy rain will clear eastwards tomorrow morning leaving a dry and sunnier afternoon and it will feel noticeably cooler and fresher. In Cardiff and Flintshire 21°C was recorded this afternoon but tomorrow will feel noticeably cooler with top temperatures nearer 13 to 16°C.

Tomorrow night will be dry and chilly bar the odd shower. Sunday will bring some dry, bright weather and sunshine. A few scattered showers are likely, mainly in the west but some places will stay dry and conditions should be ideal in Cardiff for the half marathon, which you can listen to live on BBC Radio Wales.

Sunday night into Monday will turn wet and windy with strong to gale force winds, the rain clearing to sunshine and showers.

Next week will feel more like autumn; often windy with showers or longer spells of rain but some drier, brighter spells as well.
