Joan Baker: a life in painting

Almost 40 years of teaching means that Joan had a hand in forming the talents of generations of younger artists and she is an important part of visual arts history in South Wales. Joan herself was taught by Evan Charlton and Ceri Richards and has always found time to paint alongside her teaching work.

I went to see her at home in Cardiff - the house in which she was born in 1922 - and discovered that she's still painting, still filled with wonder for landscape and the coast and has plenty of wisdom to share about the visual arts.

She seems quite relaxed at the prospect of the retrospective exhibition at Orielau Ty Crawshay and said she didn't know exactly what works would be in the show. But then, when you started exhibiting in 1948, why shouldn't you take it all in your stride?
