What's Wales Worth?

Next week I'll be focusing on a huge part of the economy that tends to get ignored.

On the whole, start-up companies get a lot of attention, as do big businesses such as foreign-owned investment projects. But I'll be taking a close look at the existing stock of medium sized companies out there, the kind of firms you find in every business park and industrial estate near you.

I'll be finding out what needs to happen for these firms to grow. One example I have is a pet food company in Carmarthenshire which has a war chest and is looking to grow thanks to the backing of a Californian investment company.

I'll also be assessing the performance of the Welsh Government's investment bank, Finance Wales, and telling the stories of two Welsh entrepreneurs who took the bold step of leaving big employers to start up on their own. One in the bedroom of a house in Abercynon, the other after a random conversation on a train.

All next week, BBC Cymru Wales will be looking at the state of the Welsh economy and asking What's Wales Worth? We'll be exploring real life issues about Wales's future, our place in the world and our own pockets and there'll be plenty to read, watch and listen to on television, radio and online.

The week starts on Sunday 9 June with Eye On Wales at 1.30pm on Radio Wales. Later on The Wales Report at 10.35pm on BBC One Wales will be looking at the hidden unemployed.

Wales Today will then pick up with reports and live broadcasts from across Wales week nights at 6.30pm on BBC One Wales.

Good Morning and Good Evening Wales on Radio Wales will be broadcasting live from various locations across Wales. The Jason Mohammad show will be looking at tourism every day between 10am and 1pm and will be joined by first minister Carwyn Jones on Friday 14 June.

Special editions of Wales at Work on Thursday 6.30pm and Country Focus on Sunday at 7pm will continue to put the economy under the spotlight on Radio Wales.

Radio Cymru will focus on how the economy is affecting different generations across their news programmes. Newyddion9, week nights at 9pm on S4C, will be on tour getting to grips with the issues affecting different parts of Wales.

News Online will have daily features and analysis throughout the week.

What's Wales Worth? concludes on Tuesday 18 June at 10.35pm on BBC One Wales with a special edition of Week In Week Out presented by veteran broadcaster Vincent Kane.
