After a bitterly cold start to the week, it has now turned less cold although still chilly with some frost. Last night the temperature in parts of Mid Wales plunged as low as minus 8 Celsius in places such as Swyddffynnon and Tirabad!
Minus 8 is not only the lowest temperature night-time recorded in Wales so far this month but of the whole winter – December, January and February!
It was also the coldest March night since 2006 when the low was -10.8 Celsius. The March record is -12.8 Celsius on 3 March 1965.

Tonight temperatures will stay above freezing for a change with cloud bringing a little rain. The wind will freshen as well.
Tomorrow a cold front will bring a spell of rain. Some heavy rain too, with 20-40mm possible in the south.
The weekend will be very mixed due to low pressure: a few sunny intervals but also showers. The showers will be heavy and prolonged in places with hail and thunder possible. Sleet and snow is likely in places too. The snow will be mainly but not exclusively on higher ground, the hills and mountains.
If you're in Cardiff for the rugby on Saturday, some sunshine is likely but with a 40% chance of showers. Temperatures will rise to a peak of 8 Celsius so feeling chilly with a southerly breeze becoming gusty in the afternoon.
Next week looks like turning colder with sleet and snow in places. So we haven’t seen back of winter yet although it may turn a little milder by 22 March.
