The Laugharne Weekend 2013

Polly March

Celebrated pop artist Sir Peter Blake, columnist and author Caitlin Moran and songstress Beth Orton are just some of the guests who will be heading to Laugharne this weekend for its seventh festival of literature and music.

Other stars include comedians Charlie Higson, Mark Watson and Phill Jupitus (as Porky the Poet), as well as crime fiction writer Mark Billingham, poet Jackie Kay and singer Tracey Thorn.

Alongside them will be a sound representation of Welsh talent with writers Owen Sheers and Rachel Trezise, and bands including Pen Pastwn, Sen Segur, Trwbador, and The Gentle Good.

Some of the other people appearing are Kate Tempest, who has just won The Ted Hughes Poetry Prize, comedian Robin Ince, BBC Radio 6 Music present and writer Stuart Maconie, writer Belinda Bauer and the Scottish author John Niven.

I caught up with organiser and promoter Richard Thomas ahead of the big event, which runs from 5-7 April.

He said many of the individual events including Moran, columnist Grace Dent and performance poet John Cooper Clarke were already sold out but there are some weekend tickets left.

"I think this is the most consistently good line-up we've ever had," he told me.

"There are lots of strong women in there, something for everyone, with authors, comedians, musicians and poets.

"Only a philistine wouldn't find something to enjoy in the line-up!"

This year for the first time the event is playing host to a simultaneous food festival in the stunning castle grounds to improve the food offering, particularly for vegetarians.
